Project Brief

The project brief envisioned a development that seamlessly integrates with the existing urban fabric of Grafton while establishing a distinct identity, with a core focus on sustainability:

• Enhancing the Sustainable Gateway Experience: Create a welcoming and attractive entrance to Grafton that prioritizes pedestrian and cyclist access, fostering a sense of arrival and reducing reliance on cars.
• Promoting a Sustainable Community Hub: Encourage pedestrian activity and connection to existing public pathways and spaces by having areas for the community to enjoy. Integrating public art, food trucks, and gatherings to name a few allows the community to come together.
• Sustainable Design at its Core: Implement environmentally conscious practices throughout the project lifecycle, from construction to operation, to minimize the project's environmental footprint.
• Functional and Adaptable Design: Create flexible retail spaces catering to a diverse range of tenants and future needs, with a focus on energy efficiency and adaptability.
• Respecting Historical Context: Draw inspiration from Grafton's rich architectural heritage to create a design that complements the surrounding environment, incorporating sustainable materials and practices where possible.

Project Innovation/Need

Grafton Lifestyle Centre pushes the boundaries of typical large-format retail by prioritizing the community, sustainability, and a strong connection to the Northern Rivers. This innovative approach addresses the need for a development that not only serves a commercial purpose by bringing national tenants to the region but also actively contributes to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future for Grafton and the community.

Design Challenge

The design challenge lies in creating a visually appealing and functional commercial precinct that integrates seamlessly with the existing urban context while upholding Grafton's unique character.
Additionally, ensuring exceptional sustainability and fostering a sense of community were paramount concerns. The design team needed to create a space that minimizes environmental impact throughout its lifecycle, from construction materials to operational efficiency.

Future Impact

Grafton Lifestyle Centre is poised to have a significant positive impact on Grafton, with a particular emphasis on sustainability:

• Economic Growth with Environmental Consciousness. The project will create jobs during construction and operation, attracting new businesses and customers to the area by bringing A-grade national tenants to the region, all while prioritizing sustainable practices throughout the supply chain.
• Enhanced Urban Environment with Reduced Footprint. The development will improve the aesthetics of the gateway to Grafton, promoting a more welcoming and vibrant atmosphere with community site activation, a focus on pedestrian-friendly design and layout.
• Sustainable Community Hub: The emphasis on pedestrian connectivity, public spaces, and potential integration of the community with local art, food trucks, and community events will promote social interaction.
• Environmental Sustainability with Sustainable design features like solar energy, rainwater harvesting, native landscaping, energy-efficient building materials, and electric car charging stations will minimize the project's environmental footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future for Grafton and the Northern Rivers.
