Project Brief

With a "micro-renovation" method, the project has built a new tourist destination integrating "the cultural street museum, a new model of regional creation and open cultural exchanges". It has successfully rejuvenated the vitality of Huaxiba streets through the micro-renovation of facades and streets, which improved the living conditions of the neighborhood, respected the surrounding historical architectural complexes that blend Chinese and Western styles, and rebuilt University Road into a street museum that continues to grow. It has achieved the goal of turning Huaxiba into a new IP of urban culture and an iconic city with regional characteristics in China's urban renewal development.

Project Innovation/Need

The overall design has explored distinct regional innovation methods that are exclusive to Huaxiba. Through modern design techniques and new materials, the project combines the architectural elements of the old buildings of Sichuan University to establish the regional architectural order belonging to the University Road in Huaxiba. In terms of details, Chinese elements are integrated with Western-style Quaker architectural volumes, in which bright colors are combined with abstracted mythical animals, and classical decorative elements are reconstructed and transformed into modern architectural language. The combination of Chinese and Western elements results in a unique style in the neighborhood.

Design Challenge

The original building of No. 11 Huaxiba Courtyard on University Road is a two-story brick-concrete commercial building. By reinforcing the original structure, the building has been transformed from two floors to part three floors, maintaining the original volume. After the renovation, new urban functional spaces accessible to the public are added, including the Huaxi Publishing House, Huaxi Story House, and East-West Cultural Forum; each newly added function has an independent and recognizable entrance and exit. The original overhang on the ground floor is optimized to form a veranda to serve citizens; the roof has been transformed into a terrace for citizens to relax. The facade adopts fiber cement, a new material that can be molded to various customized shapes and quickly assembled on site. Together with other materials such as specially made antique bricks, high-quality stainless steel, and high-transparency glass, it created a unique charm inheriting the spiritual connotation of Huaxiba, making the street a popular spot for new Internet celebrities in the metropolitan area.
