Sencity provides new outlets for information, entertainment, and experience, Sencity is changing the way we think about responsibility, and imbuing the urban environment with moments of joy. Sencity has witnessed a series of collaborations with the fashion, art, and technology industries, with successful projects across New York, Sydney and Beijing.
Project Brief
Windlight has become a phenomenal landmark in Beijing, designed and envisaged in ode to our mother earth by allowing visitors to reflect on the 2 core elements of life: wind and light. Wind - one of the most mysterious and profound natural powers from our planet that fuels the ever moving forces in life; Light - the bright beam of positive energy and life giving warmth that provides hope to all life on earth.
The simple act of blowing air on the pinwheels, or the movements created, serve as a physical manifestation as well as a reminder for us to recall and reflect on our innocence and sweet moments of interacting with our mother nature when we were young.
Project Innovation/Need
A group of glowing pinwheels are scattered on both sides of the chosen pathway or placed in a centralized position. Pedestrians who walk past are able to interact with them by blowing air onto specially marked pinwheels which are integrated with sensors in front of the Windlight.
Collectively the ambient light and responsive environment will promote a harmonious memorable urban experience for people to envision the future of happy and meaningful urban lives.
Design Challenge
Each pinwheel is individually powered and will be lit-up at night by programmable LEDs, resulting in waves of lights or soothing flashes that correspond to the interactions from the blown pinwheel going outwards, creating a symphony of spinning pinwheels and light. We also built a custom mechanism to combine the lights together to form the high-interactive pinwheels, all these indicate the pure passion for giving people betting experiences as artists.
Sustainability
Pedestrians who walk past are able to interact with them by blowing air onto different pinwheels in front of the dreamy urban intervention. Therefore the materials we used in Windlight is robust and durable degradable organic leaves. This is an innovation in making digital innovation with circular economy in mind.
Urban Design
This award celebrates creativity and innovation in the process of designing and shaping cities, towns and villages, and is about making connections between people and places, movement and urban form, nature and the built fabric. Consideration given to giving form, shape and character to groups of buildings, streets and public spaces, transport systems, services and amenities, whole neighbourhoods and districts, and entire cities, to make urban areas functional, attractive and sustainable.
