Project Overview
Jiefang Park is the first artificial wetland park in Wuhan, China. It plays a crucial role in the environmental protection of this city. One of the most significant plants in Jiefang Park is Metasequoia, which grows in wetland. Metasequoia has its unique ecosystem for the growth of animals and plants, as well as water circulation and purification systems. The small-scale metasequoia wetland is a miniature of the earth's ecological environment.
We have designed an immersive wetland venue to help teenagers explore the wetland environment, discover the vegetation community characteristics, and learn about wetland science knowledge and water purification systems. Moreover, this wetland environment can visually display the real-time number of migratory birds that have stayed in Wuhan. The immersive experiential space allows visitors to get close to natural life and evokes awareness of environmental conservation.

Project Brief
In Metasequoia Wonderland in Jiefang Park, digital technology is integrated into every aspect of the space experience. In collaboration with Tsinghua University and based on real-time ecological data capture and development system, the real-time open-source data on the number of migratory birds in Wuhan is presented as particle flow that changes visually. Visitors can change the shape of the particle flow by adding their captured gestures. Through infrared interactive technology, when visitors step into specific locations, introductory audio about wetland plants will be diffused from the top and the stamen-shaped lights close to the visitors will change synchronously. The radar-based gesture interactive projection creates an immersive scene including emergent pond plants, floating plants, submerged plants, floating-leaf plants, and animals and plants under the wetland. As visitors walk through the wetland, the scenario changes, showcasing different kinds of wetland water purification knowledge.
Project Need
Through artistic scenography, graphic design and movie display, the project creates a "dream wetland" in the park. The immersive art form contributes to a natural wetland environment that displays various organisms in the wetland harmoniously and creatively, allowing visitors to understand and love these diversified life forms. The exhibition space combines lighting interaction, big data visual interaction, projection and sensing installations, radar sensing, and other technologies to give visitors a highly immersive interactive experience.
Metasequoia Wonderland is a natural science education center that features local park characteristics and regional differences, forming a natural science education base system with rich forms. It is a digital exhibition hall that explores cutting-edge science display approaches, which combines Alibaba's platform and technology to generate a repeatable digital space product. It is also a second classroom for additional extra-curricular content, which cooperates with schools to carry out natural knowledge learning in nature. Additionally, it offers highly participatory and immersive online and offline experiences to facilitate content promotion.
Design Challenge
The design team conceived a natural science educational space that highlights the connections between humans and nature, striving to create an immersive environment that would engage all human senses from multiple perspectives. To achieve this, the design team incorporated data-driven design principles for the exhibition space construction, breaking through conventional visual scenography and adopting a more artistic multimedia approach. As a result, the exhibition space offers an immersive experience supported and surrounded by data of nature.
The project aims to create an interactive educational experience that would use local real-time data to engage visitors. To this end, the design team used an open-source database of local data from Tsinghua University, capturing real-time information about migratory birds in Wuhan, resulting in an exhibition that keeps upgrading. Local flora and fauna of Wuhan's wetlands are interpreted in a design language to create an immersive environment with the characteristics of Jiefang Park in Wuhan. By leveraging technology and design in a more engaging and accessible way, the project was intended to inspire teenagers to explore and learn more about the natural world around them.
Sustainability
The project is committed to using local resources and recycling materials while also exploring the use of new materials that align with principles of low carbon and sustainability. The exhibition hall uses real-time data from Tsinghua University's open-source database to accurately capture ecological data of local migratory birds. This real-time data helps to provide an interactive and educational experience for visitors. The unique vegetation and wetland landscape of Jiefang Park is incorporated into the immersive environment of the exhibition hall to enhance its cultural identity, providing an engaging place for teenagers to learn about environmental conservation. Technology and design are utilized to create an engaging and accessible platform for environmental education. This innovative approach offers teenagers a highly interactive and entertaining space for self-exploration and learning about environmental conservation.
To further improve convenience and efficiency, an online applet is accessible to provide paperless visit reservation services and electronic dissemination of popular science information. Visitors are also encouraged to participate in online activities, making the learning process more interactive and engaging.
