Project Overview

The magnolia flower is a symbol of nobility, purity, and elegance. Its delicate petals and sweet fragrance evoke a sense of grace and beauty. Not only that, but the magnolia also holds a special significance in Chinese culture, as it is often associated with the legendary heroine Mulan. In the story, Mulan takes on the burden of her elders and bravely fights for her country, embodying the same qualities of strength and honor that the magnolia represents.

Project Brief

The project at hand entails the revitalization of the interior of a pre-owned house. The proprietor's family is deeply rooted in the sporting goods industry, and the house served as a residence for the proprietor's parents during their travels and gatherings. However, now that the couple has taken over the family business, the house has become symbolic of their inheritance. The objective behind the renovation is to merge the old memories with the new space, thereby creating a homely ambiance that is warm and evokes a sense of nostalgia while also preparing for a fresh new start. To address the issues with the excessive sun exposure and high energy consumption in the original layout, the team decided to rearrange the master bedroom, second bedroom, bathroom, and living room while also incorporating traditional feng shui principles that hold significance for the elders. The end product is a comfortable living space that caters to all the requirements of the proprietors.

Project Need

Upon entering the premises, one will notice that measures have been taken to adapt to the changing living habits brought about by the post-epidemic era. The entrance areas have been equipped with disinfection items, while storage configurations have been adjusted to include a stain-resistant closet that can be sanitized and deodorized. On the other hand, the shared living spaces have been cleverly designed to incorporate the original, unchanging structure of the large beams and pillars of the house, which have been wrapped with rounded shapes or cabinets to both decrease the sense of volume and provide practical functions. The owner, who had studied abroad, desired to combine modern style with some American elements to create a connection with his past experiences. Grey tones were used in the overall color scheme, which was balanced with eco-friendly art paints, creating a calm atmosphere and a visually rich experience. To accommodate the owner's Chinese cooking habits, the team not only equipped the kitchen with complete functions but also added sliding doors to prevent fumes from escaping. Moreover, a secret door design was employed to define shared and private areas, allowing for privacy and relaxation for all family members during visits from friends and relatives.

Design Challenge

When planning the layout of the private living area, the team took into consideration the original location of the master bedroom near the road, as well as the issues with the west-facing sun and feng shui. As a solution, the team switched the location of the master bedroom with the second bedroom and made partial adjustments to the walls of the living room and bedroom. This allowed for the extension of the bedroom's space, giving residents more flexibility in the use of the area. Additionally, an open dressing room was included to increase spatial efficiency. The children's room continues the overall space, incorporating the color Rose Damascene, which symbolizes the owner and his wife's fond memories of their trip to Bulgaria, Turkey. The color aims to preserve the ambiance and atmosphere of the environment in their memories and symbolizes passing down goodness and blessings to the next generation. The bathrooms were designed with consideration for the usage routes and habits of the elders and children. As a result, differences in floor levels and the location of sanitary fixtures were adjusted to provide a comfortable and safe bathing environment for all.

Sustainability

To achieve sustainable development, the design of this space incorporates the concept of environmental sustainability. Excessive decoration is avoided, and existing materials are utilized as much as possible, such as the lightweight steel frame structure of the walls. Primary materials that burden the environment are minimized through the use of a special eco-friendly paint made from recycled local reservoir sludge and ground oyster shells. The environmental impact is reduced through the use of easy-to-clean fabrics, and the frequency of detergent use is reduced. The layout and color configuration have been adjusted to reduce energy consumption and provide even and soft lighting. The space design not only presents aesthetic appeal, but also provides environmental benefits such as "Habitat Health", "Eco-Health", "Human-Centered Health", and "Earth Sustainability", thanks to the careful planning of the team.
