Project Overview
South Melbourne Primary School is Victoria's first high-rise state school and now caters for 160 students, although the six-level building will eventually accommodate 525 primary school students and 44 early learning students, supplemented by various integrated community services and facilities.

Project Brief
SMPS is an exemplar of a contemporary 21st-century learning environment developed within the context of inner urban regeneration and focusing on the needs of today’s students and also the wider community. It is a beautiful learning environment that adequately inspires and supports the enthusiastic crew of young minds who represent the next generation of Victoria's urban youth.
Project Innovation/Need
In the last few years, the Fishermans Bend precinct has welcomed thousands of new residents. With this in mind, the plans for SMPS begun. Before the first school bell had even rung, the school were at capacity for prep enrolments, highlighting the need for such a facility in the area.
Architecture - Education
This award celebrates the design process and product of planning, designing and constructing form, space and ambience that reflect functional, technical, social, and aesthetic considerations. Consideration given for material selection, technology, light and shadow.
