Project Overview

The project is located in the radiation area of Dahongqiao. In the future, it will be a multi-category review project that gathers top educational resources, has a new model of city-level business, and is surrounded by a 230,000-square-meter urban ecological park. The project is located in Panlong Town, which is a rare thousand-year-old Jiangnan ancient town in Shanghai. The history of Panlong Town is a microcosm of Jiangnan, and it has become a witness, participant and promoter of the development of Shanghai Jiangnan culture.As a 14,600-square-meter park demonstration area, this project is a miniature version of Panlong Tiandi. We excavate the cultural core of the site to create a life scene that inherits the past and looks forward to the future. Trying to interpret the lifestyle of Panlong in the future through the technique of landscape.

Project Brief

From the plan of Panlong Tiandi to a site of 14,600 square meters, the design concept takes the meaning of "curving water and lingering residence" in the ten sceneries of Panlong, and constructs a modern Jiangnan texture and poetic pattern with 9 forms and functions of waterscapes. Water becomes the main body of the space, form a continuous and dynamic space. The conversion of parallel space and time constitutes seven cultural experience themed scenes "Meeting Seven Moments of Jiangnan"-Garden of Rain, Lotus Pond of Summer Solstice, Garden of Four Seasons, Mang Flower Valley, Vernal Equinox Square, Guyu Stream, Xiaomanqiu Pond.

Project Innovation/Need

In the design, the art form of space beauty, naturalness and cultural inheritance has been deeply explored and practiced.
1. The entrance space is designed to remove the complicated forms to the greatest extent, the invisible water curtain outlet, and the structure is as light and thin as possible, showing the elegant, pure beauty and artistic conception of the south of the Yangtze River;
2. Invisible trail in the water, in order to realize the trail experience of hiding in the water, the designer installed 150 thick plexiglass on the inner side through the research of materials and the practice of craftsmanship.
3. Triangular waterscape: the pool bottom pavement adopts three kinds of special-shaped cut stone processing, presenting the texture form of gradual change in size and the effect of falling water at different flow rates.
4. Interactive wave push and pool bottom lighting design: children interactively experience the push wave paddling pool, with the concept of a stream falling along the micro-topography layers, presenting a gurgling natural scene. The bottom of the stream is equipped with fiber optic starlights and spray devices, and create a dream playing place.

Design Challenge

The plan of Panlong Tiandi is an international and open living area. Based on Panlong’s Jiangnan culture and the current open lifestyles needs, how the site design should be developed is the first problem faced by the design. Regarding our thinking on this issue, we approached it from two perspectives: "creative use of resources" and "immersively stimulating the spirit of the place". First of all, by exploring the past, present and future of the site, we will fully tap the site's resource advantages and present it in an artistic and diversified manner. From planning to site, taking the meaning of "curving water and lingering residence" in Panlong's ten sceneries, water is introduced into the garden, and the modern Jiangnan texture and poetic pattern are constructed with 9 forms and functions of water sceneries. Secondly, through the exploration of the original culture, materials and language of the site, to find the cultural resonance between people and space to trigger emotions. From the four quadrants of architecture to the natural four-season image space and time conversion, creating a cultural scene experience of "meeting the seven moments of Jiangnan".

Sustainability

The nature of the site itself is firstly the park green space, and secondly the residential demonstration area. Our site design is based on natural elements such as greenery and water. Taking nature as the main body, making the architectural landscape intertwined and interdependent, trying to break the boundary of space and return to the simple natural space.
In the frontcourt design, the landscape breaks through the hard pool practice in the conventional demonstration area, designing an ecological lake, advocating the concept of natural sustainability, and the water body is treated with self-purification and recycling. The children's playground uses the concept of no power, and uses continuous grass slopes to enclose a land playing field. Children can shuttle between the sand pit and the grass slope, drill holes, rock climbing, and slide. The preliminary design fully considers the landscape effect after delivery, minimizes the amount of demolition and modification works, and ensures economic sustainability and balance with the landscape effect..
