Project Overview

The overall design objective of the HKCH is to create a non-institutional, home-like, child-friendly, comfortable and cozy environment that provides the best clinical practice under a patient-centred approach, facilitates multi-disciplinary and cross-specialty collaboration, and allows efficient and flexible use of facilities and resources. The Inspiration of the Building Design is derived from natural elements, with generous incorporation of various sustainable design elements, aiming at an efficient, unique and green hospital, with the focus on the overall organization quality and space connectivity.

Project Brief

Hong Kong Children's Hospital (HKCH) is going to be the first children hospital in Hong Kong’s public healthcare system mainly focusing on tertiary services and providing quality specialty care for the referrals of complex and rare paediatric cases which required multi-disciplinary management. As announced in the 2007-08 Policy Address, this government initiative aims to raise the professional standards and enhance the quality of paediatric services by concentrating expertise, research and training with multi-partite involvement.

HKCH would be one of the public hospitals under the governance and management of HA. A dedicated governance structure has been set up for the project, in particular the Planning and Commissioning Committee, chaired by Chief Executive of HA, to oversee the service development and capital works of the HKCH. HKCH is going to provide territory-wide service, while it will obtain management and administrative support from Kowloon Central Cluster.

Project Innovation/Need

Construction has been started at the Kai Tak Development Area in August 2013, with an aim for completion by 2017. The HKCH is targeted to commence operation by phases in 2018. Upon commissioning, HKCH will be the key player of the paediatric network in Hospital Authority (HA), which will operate through a hub-and-spoke model with HKCH serving as a tertiary referral center for complex cases, while the paediatric departments in other public hospitals will provide emergency, secondary, step-down and community paediatric care.

Design Challenge

HA is now working on the paediatric service re-organisation, staff training and manpower planning, with engagement of key stakeholders including Colleges, Universities, NGOs, patient groups, as well as establishing international collaboration with overseas children’s hospitals.
