Project Overview
Ocean plastics destroy our natural marine and coastal habitats, endanger wildlife across the globe, pollute our food chain, and ultimately affecting the global water-food-energy nexus. Here, we present ClearBot, a scalable, AI-powered, plastic collecting intelligent robotic solution to address the ocean plastic epidemic with a sustainable community-centric symbiotic ecosystem.

Clearbot was one of the winners in the pitching competition of this year’s Start-up Express, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council’s (HKTDC) leading entrepreneurship development programme. The winners are arranged to participate in a series of activities that help them build connections, explore markets, seek partners and enhance brand awareness.
Project Innovation/Need
The start-up is named after its product. Clearbot is an AI-[artificial intelligence] driven swarm robotics system. The system comprises floating trash baskets with cameras, solar-powered motors, on-board computers and a networking system linking them together.
We implemented an advanced computer vision program to recognize floating plastic, which is also able to distinguish floating plastic from marine creatures. We are still improving the accuracy of the AI, and we believe this technology will be of great help to the autonomous navigation of ClearBot in near future.

This award celebrates creative and innovative design for either a component or overall product. Consideration given to aspects that relate to human usage, aesthetics, selection of components and materials, and the resolution of assembly, manufacturing and the overall function.
