Project Overview
The Volkswagen ID.3 extends the Volkswagen offering as the first model of a completely new generation of pure electric vehicles – featuring zero local emissions, outstanding efficiency, and full connectivity.
Organisation
Project Brief
The ID.3, which resembles the German automaker’s popular Golf hatchback, has the potential to be a very important car for VW. It will be the first vehicle built on the company’s new modular all-electric platform, one that will power dozens more cars and SUVs that are waiting in the wings as part of the larger Volkswagen Group’s multibillion-dollar push into EVs.
Project Innovation/Need
VW chief executive Herbert Diess says the ID3, the new electric car, is "not just a new car, it is the beginning of an electric offensive. We are faced by the greatest challenge in our company’s history. It is perhaps the greatest challenge in the history of mobility: we are addressing our responsibility for our share of global carbon emissions. That is why we are committed to complying with the Paris Climate Agreement, with the goal of becoming a company with a net carbon-neutral2 balance by 2050".
Design Challenge
The ID.3 should be a car that’s compact in profile, but feels more comfortable to ride in, and also has more storage than a vehicle of this size. Extra space is a common promise when it comes to EVs, but it may matter even more in a car like the ID.3, which will cost less than almost any other all-electric on the market. VW is likely to hammer on this point as it ramps up to the 2020 release of the car. Some other high-tech touches include an optional “augmented reality” heads-up display that projects information onto the ID.3’s windshield, and voice-activated controls that can be triggered by saying “Hello ID.” There’s a wireless charging mat for smartphones, and buyers can upgrade to a Beats-branded stereo package, which VW says “offers an audio atmosphere like at a live concert.”
Sustainability
The all-electric ID.3 is the first Volkswagen ever that is not just produced with a carbon-neutral2 balance but which is also delivered to you with a carbon-neutral2 balance. Manufacture and delivery of the ID.3 to the retailer is independently certified as net carbon neutral by TUV Nord. Net carbon neutrality is achieved through a combination of both emission reduction and off-setting unavoidable emissions. For production, VW rely on energy efficiency and the use of green electricity to avoid emissions wherever possible. In the meantime, the share of emissions during the manufacturing phase that are unavoidable in the short term will be successively reduced and offset through certified climate projects. As the first climate protection project, they are supporting their partner Permian Global in the Kantigan Mentaya Project in protecting 149,800 hectares of Indonesian rain forest, which absorbs large quantities of CO2. And after delivery they are partnering with Octopus Energy so you can enjoy affordable, zero-emission charging at home.
