The Racing Network app provides Australian racing followers with live footage and form guides anywhere they go. Available on iPhone, iPad and Android phone, the app enhances the racing experience by providing up to date information, video replays, photo finishes, betting tips, latest news and detailed horse, jockey and trainer information.

Project Brief

Telstra commissioned Outware Mobile to design and develop the Racing Network app in time for the spring racing carnival in 2012.

The brief was to create an app for iPhone, iPad and Android phone that would enhance the racing experience for users on the go and at home. The app needed to provide users with up-to-date news, live footage of races and detailed race and horse information in an intuitive, easy to use interface.

The timeline for the project was incredibly tight, leaving only 10 weeks to design and develop the entire app from the ground up.

Project Need

The Racing Network app adds a whole new dimension to the racing experience. At the races, users are able to access dynamic and up-to-date information such as form guides, betting odds, gear changes and horse scratchings at their fingertips, so that they can spend more time enjoying the sport that they love.

At home or on the go, the Racing Network app allows users to keep watching live vision of races, race replays, photo finishes and race results all around Australia. Users can even research detailed information about horses, trainers, jockeys and courses on their iPad, which ensures they are well informed on all races they’re interested in. The Racing Network app brings racing to the 21st century.

This project also opens a new revenue stream for Telstra as users can subscribe through in-app-purchase to live vision and instant replays of every race.

User Experience

The Racing Network network app is designed with the everyday user in mind.

It has a clean and simple interface that is intuitive to navigate. The app is content heavy, but designed with ease of use as a priority, making it a complementary experience to the races without being a distraction.

The user is always presented with simple, easy-to-understand information and can easily drill down to incredible detail.

For some reason racing form apps generally have extremely poor user experience. The Racing Network app aimed to show that it is possible to expose race data in a beautiful and easy-to-use app.

Particular attention was given to the performance of the app. The API was extensively re-worked to ensure fast performance for the user.

Project Marketing

The Racing Network app was heavily promoted on the Racing Network website, through online newsletters followed by racing followers, via social media and on television.

The response has been extremely positive, encouraging word of mouth spread.

The app is a fixture in the top-grossing sports apps on both the Apple and Google app stores.
