Project Overview

The design for Little Collins in Notting Hill is one that breaks down the monotonous workings of business park cafes and seeks to want more than just an operator. It has set a new benchmark in both design and format for business park cafes. Little Collins hopes to be an escape for patrons and has fast become the metaphorical heart of the neighbourhood. The end product is a dynamic and warm 'Belisure' hub that provokes and entices patrons to celebrate food and coffee.

Project Brief

The client wanted to create a space that would become a focal point of Ferntree Business Park for both staff within the park as well as acting as an interface with Ferntree Gully Road. They wanted to collaborate with a highly regarded cafe operator and set a new standard in business park amenity. Great emphasis was put on good food & coffee with the hope that the space become the metaphorical heart of the park. The space needed to be representative of a true inner-city Melbourne cafe, a sensory difference and a mix of light and dark colours with natural materials, something unseen to the Notting Hill commercial precinct.

Project Need

The design of the space is light, yet rustic interiors mimics an inner city Melbourne cafe, contrasting its leafy surrounds. Expressed pre-cast concrete, retired sun drenched Oregon timber and 'handmade' tiling accentuated the edgy Melbourne feel. The kitchen is visually connected to the cafe through an opening within a staggard recycled wall. The use of tiles in white and black create a dynamic contract to the warmth of the timber. An eclectic mix of furniture enhances an urban transformation with an offering of bar high seating to large communal tables. A combination of light and dark timber benches, chairs and stools sets the benchmark of what was clearly needed in the area. Powder coated metal legs and American Oak timbers were specified as suitable materials by Studio AP/D. While brand manager developed a floor to ceiling feature wall to further illustrate the theme of 'Escapism' as part of the retail experience.

Design Challenge

The brief of the project was to create a place that was to be a focal point of the park as well as an interface with Ferntree Gully Road. This north facing space needed to have a presence, be bright while being inviting from road level. One of the major challenges was to improve the outside amenity, this was done so by extending the outside dinning area and landscaping the surrounding area. The outside dinning area was set on a base of exposed aggregate juxtaposed against the bright metal Tolix chairs and white market umbrellas. A slip lane for access was need and the surrounding garden beds have been filled with drought tolerant plants which will thrive once matured.

Sustainability.

A strong emphasis on adopting environmentally sustainable initiatives throughout Ferntree Business Park. All the newly constructed buildings achieve 4.5 star NABERS Energy & 4 star Green Star ratings as a minimum. A key consideration to minimise the need to use tap water for irrigation, achieved by best practice design and utilising drought tolerant plants. Water collected via rainwater harvesting will be used as supplemental irrigation. Rainwater harvesting will see rainwater collected from the run off from the roof tops of buildings and car parks will be collected and stored in tanks and later used for toilet flushing and landscape irrigation. The installation of LED lighting as the lighting throughout the Park. This is a relatively new technology that significantly reduces energy consumption as as providing a cleaner white light.
