Project Overview
Amazing Buns at The Glen was designed to encapsulate a nostalgic and sentimental feeling of homemade Chinese steamed buns and snacks, of street markets, neighbourhood stalls and personal association to family and comfort food. The location in a busy suburban shopping mall food court required efficiency in design, catering for high foot traffic and a modern environment.

Project Brief
Amazing Buns aimed to create an authentic Chinese food stall vibe, re-imagined in a contemporary context. Like the layers of deliciousness of your favourite bao, the experience of finding and approaching Amazing Buns is one of discovery, of exciting the senses and finding something wonderful. The setting of the modern shopping centre creates an opportunity to lure shoppers for a new experience. From afar, the sight of steam brings feelings of local street bao vendors and punch of colour draws attention. Getting closer, the smell of spices, soup and stewing excite; as you approach, baomasters can be seen hard at work. Always intriguing, customers can take a peek into the preparation of their favourite traditional food whilst they wait. Like the dazzling speed of the street vendors, the layout has been optimised for speed, impact and efficiently. Curved edges gently guide the customer. Finishes and textures were chosen to bring a sense of tradition with elements of Asian furniture food stalls.
Project Innovation/Need
Colour plays a very important role to create this warm and fuzzy nostalgic feeling. Woven cane panels in Burnt Earth red bring fragments of a traditional shop house or furniture in a modern interpretation. A red palette selection was used to bring high impact, with varying textures and hues to bring depth. Metalwork in Gloss frame the space and anchor it to the open food court area giving its unique identity.
Design Challenge
To create an authentic street vibe without theming especially in food court where there are very strict design guideline. The generously frontage of the tenancy creates a challenge to make the tenancy stand out yet integrate into the whole food court. We take it as an opportunity for the interior to become part of the food court blurring the lines between interior and exterior as our idea of street activation.
With very high foot traffic and shoppers requiring fast turnaround in orders, the layout had to create maximum efficiency, to enable the vendors to accomodate all customers.
Sustainability
Building sustainability was one of the main consideration during the design process. Recycled timbers were used to line the front paneling to help mitigate low energy. Recyclable bamboo cane was sourced as the main feature to create textures and bring a sense of tradition with elements of Asian furniture food stalls
