Project Overview

Each space acts as a portal from the snowy outposts of Hoth to the sands of Tatooine, brought to life through brick-built sculptures, soundscapes, interactive digital experiences, and mosaics that become part of the evolving galaxy.

Impeller crafted this world from the ground up. We shaped the experience flow, custom-designed the scenic elements, integrated the LEGO, Disney and Lucasfilm assets, and managed delivery across every touchpoint. Touring, playable, and utterly unforgettable.

Digital interfaces, building challenges, and full-scale character moments (including the Emperor’s Throne Room) are balanced with quiet story moments and tactile build stations. The flow is intuitive, layered and flexible for different venues and demographics.

This is exhibition-making at the blockbuster level. Emotionally resonant, technically precise, and endlessly engaging. Impeller's design has already captivated thousands and is structured to keep building momentum with every tour stop.

Team

At the heart of this intergalactic adventure is Impeller, the creative force behind the narrative, vision, design, and delivery of this galaxy-sized LEGO Star Wars exhibition.

Led by Adrian Caddaye, Impellers' founder, project director, and resident Star Wars encyclopaedia. The project fused storytelling mastery with hands-on play. Adrian's dual role as creative director and franchise liaison was the backbone of the experience, ensuring that every scene, sequence, and character moment was authentic, exciting, and deeply respectful of over four decades of Star Wars legacy.

Impeller's lead Designer team of Anna Torres and Brad (Mr Bee) Boyce worked closely with Adrian to shape a journey that was intuitive and unforgettable. From dramatic reveal moments to quiet spaces of reflection and play, Impellers' design team curated a rhythm that spoke to fans of every generation using LEGO as a medium for nostalgia, wonder, and imagination.

Impeller managed every detail across concept, design, fabrication, and installation. We coordinated stakeholders from The LEGO Group, Disney, and LSWE Pty Ltd, ensuring that all approvals and creative decisions aligned with the universe's highest standards and delivered a show that met the expectations of some of the most passionate fans in the world.

To bring our vision to life, Impeller assembled a crack team of specialist collaborators. Owen Lugg led the audiovisual and lighting design, working under Impellers' direction to amplify key cinematic moments with theatrical precision. Evolve CMS, led by Joel Golino, constructed the physical builds, translating Impellers' designs into robust, tour-ready structures that maintained quality across all install sites. Their builds allowed us to travel lightyears (well, thousands of kilometres) without compromising spectacle.

We called on Eye Candy Animation and WildBear for interactive design, video and audio production to produce dynamic AV and digital interactive elements that complemented our physical storytelling.
Impeller didn't just direct, we created, guided, produced, and problem-solved every step of the way. From design to delivery, it was our team that made the magic real.

Project Brief

The brief was bold: reimagine Star Wars in LEGO bricks and deliver an experience that would thrill superfans and newcomers alike across ages, cultures and continents.

Commissioned by LSWE Pty Ltd in association with The LEGO Group and Disney, the exhibition needed to be instantly recognisable, deeply authentic, and endlessly engaging. It had to honour over 40 years of Star Wars storytelling while inviting hands-on participation from visitors.

The result is an exhibition packed with jaw-dropping builds, kinetic challenges, and storytelling flair. But more than that, it’s a celebration of play, memory, and connection, designed to travel the world. More than an exhibition, it’s a launchpad for the next generation of Jedi, builders, and dreamers.

Project Innovation/Need

Impeller's participatory approach to the design of the LEGO Star Wars Exhibition represents a new benchmark in museum touring exhibitions, where storytelling, interactivity, and design ingenuity come together at scale.
This is Star Wars like never before, not just seen, but built by you. Impeller reimagined the traditional exhibition model, embedding creative agency directly into the visitor journey.

The design invites guests to contribute to the evolving exhibition itself, building lightsabers, droids, and Endor-inspired forest scenes, which are then displayed alongside professionally built models. The exhibition fuses large-scale LEGO artistry with co-creative, interactive zones, giving fans agency inside the narrative universe.

From motion-sensored models to mystery mosaics, every element was designed to surprise and involve. It redefines the touring exhibition model, not just as a spectacle, but as a playground of shared imagination.
No passive viewing — this is fandom in action.

Design Challenge

Designing an exhibition within the Star Wars universe presented an extraordinary creative and logistical challenge. As a franchise spanning nearly five decades, Star Wars has an intensely loyal and detail-oriented fan base. Every design decision, from spatial layout to the smallest production element,t had to respect and reflect the franchise’s expansive legacy.

Working alongside and under the strict brand oversight of Disney/Lucasfilm, Impeller were required to navigate complex approval processes and align with stringent visual and narrative guidelines. Ensuring compliance while maintaining design innovation demanded careful coordination, deep respect for the source material, and an unwavering commitment to quality.

Impeller navigated a knife-edge of IP approvals while pushing creative boundaries. The exhibition had to be mobile, modular, and maintain theatrical impact across venues. With a huge stakeholder matrix and a hyperspeed timeline, it was a masterclass in creative coordination. The outcome? A seamless, jaw-dropping galaxy that’s both true to canon and born for reinvention.

Sustainability

Impeller embedded sustainability into every layer of design, starting with longevity. LEGO® Star Wars™: The Exhibition was conceived as a touring powerhouse, with all elements built for repeated installation across national and global venues.

At the core is a modular build system: durable, demountable components that can be packed, transported, and rebuilt with minimal waste or downtime. Every design decision supported reuse not just once, but again and again, without compromising visual or experiential quality.

Impeller is committed to 100% locally sourced materials, supporting Australian fabricators and minimising freight emissions. All lighting and AV were specified for energy efficiency, delivering high impact with low draw.
Crucially, nothing is single-use. Every component is either recyclable or reusable at end-of-life, ensuring the exhibition not only wows audiences for years to come, but will continue to do so for decades after the LEGO Star Wars Exhibition has left our universe.
