2023 Hsinchu City International Kite Festival

Silver

Project Overview

The 2023 Hsinchu City International Kite Festival is an exciting event that will take place in Hsinchu City, Taiwan, which is famously known as the "Windy City." This city boasts a unique geographic environment that makes it an ideal location for kite performances. The festival has broken away from the traditional framework of kite festivals and adopted the theme of "Sea Wishes to Come." This theme draws inspiration from the local maritime and fishing port elements, which are the core of the festival's design.

Project Brief

The festival will feature a large number of oceanic series of stylized kites that are carefully planned to provide a high-quality leisure and tourism platform for the public. The festival aims to expand tourist traffic for the local government and revitalize local economic development. Additionally, a series of parent-child "fishing" experience activities are planned, which will allow families to bond and create lasting memories.

Project Innovation/Need

The festival will also feature environmentally friendly installation art that can be photographed and captured. This art will link local characteristics, life, and humanistic aesthetics, making it a unique and memorable experience for all attendees. The festival's organizers have put a lot of effort into planning this event, and they hope to establish the international status of the Hsinchu International Kite Festival. This event will demonstrate Hsinchu City's pursuit of innovation and sustainability, making it an event that should not be missed.
The event's overall design is based on three themes: "wind," "sea," and "technology." The organizers utilized Taiwan's only kite race course and the wind to launch a series of ocean kites, including a 30-meter-long whale kite, over 100 giant mollusc kites, string kites, stunt kites, and classic single-line plane kites. These kites created a beautiful underwater world in the sky. The organizers hope that the flying kites will bring joy and healing to the public, as kites have been known to bring blessings and healing.

The team also planned parent-child "fishing" experience activities, such as one-night dried fish DIY, fish topiary DIY, and fishery woodworking DIY, to promote education on fish-eating and the concept of protecting the sea. These activities echo the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of "SDG14 Marine Ecology," which aims to move towards the vision of sustainable oceans.

Design Challenge

In addition, the traditional kite strings were equipped with lightweight LED lights and IC programs to create innovative "glow-in-the-dark kites." Each glow-in-the-dark kite will be programmed with a computer program to present different modes of performance, integrating fluid dynamics and technology, making it the biggest highlight of the event. Unlike traditional sky lanterns that are not environmentally friendly, dangerous fireworks, and expensive drones, the glow-in-the-dark kites provide people with a new option for environmentally friendly green activities.

The festival attracts international kite enthusiasts, nurtures local talent, and encourages people to disconnect from electronic devices and embrace a healthy lifestyle. The annual International Kite Festival creates job opportunities and boosts related industries, such as catering, accommodation, and transportation. The event also inspires local kite makers to create unique designs, promoting Taiwan's own brand and enhancing the competitiveness of the kite industry on the global stage.

Sustainability

In response to the modern emphasis on slow living and sustainable development, this project has integrated green environmental protection and ocean care into the landscape wind turbine installation art. This integration aims to link art and ecology ideally. The windmill tree, made of recycled materials such as discarded water pipes and PET bottles, will be used in the windmill installation. Additionally, installation art and DIY materials made of sea-waste materials such as driftwood will also be used. The kite festival itself is an environmentally friendly event. Kite-flying relies primarily on wind power, avoiding excessive energy consumption compared to electronic entertainment activities. Kite-flying does not produce air or water pollution, and its production and operation do not require the consumption of large amounts of resources. It can also be made environmentally friendly by using sustainable materials based on individual choice. More importantly, kite-flying is often a community-based activity that promotes human interaction and community cohesion, thereby promoting the goal of sustainable development.
