Project Overview

The project goal is to establish an innovative hotel concept in response to the growing appeal of "Glamping". It emphasizes the notion of "living in harmony with nature" and nurturing human connections. The design integrates elements from traditional communal spaces in Taiwan, drawing inspiration from the inner court of a "traditional farmhouse" (three-section compound house) and the imagery of people congregating beneath a tree to delineate its communal areas. This distinctive approach not only pays homage to cultural traditions but also challenges conventional design standards, presenting a rejuvenating and immersive travel experience in Taiwan.

Project Brief

This project's concept of "the more local, the more international" aims to depart from the conventional hostel model by incorporating distinct local characteristics and culture. Its objective is strengthening the connection between "people and nature" and "people and people."

Situated near a natural river, the project draws inspiration from its surroundings. By leveraging traditional local culture, the design team aims to craft a distinctive architectural form and deliver a novel hostel experience. Our initiative also encompasses the use of eco-friendly building materials to facilitate the repurposing of local specialty materials. Ultimately, our objective is to promote this concept globally, showcasing Taiwan's unique hostel establishment.

Project Innovation/Need

The project is inspired by "The Courtyard" and "Under the Big Tree" to create an open and independent secluded public space. This space aims to bring neighbours closer together, enhance humanistic communication, and offer an experience of unity, wandering, and visiting. It reexamines and redefines the traditional concept of the most private bathing space in houses.

The most private bathtub is intentionally located on the outdoor terrace, symbolizing the connection between humans and nature and providing the ultimate experience of contact with nature. Design Challenge

The project focuses on the concept of "wild luxury," aiming to differentiate itself from typical hostels in Taiwan by incorporating outdoor bathing spaces and large floor-to-ceiling windows to bring travellers closer to nature.

It also includes interconnected private courtyards to encourage interaction among guests, fostering a sense of community. Additionally, the project blends traditional Taiwanese living elements with the modern concept of glamping, offering travellers a unique and culturally rich lodging experience.

Sustainability

To practice the idea of "ESG", wood-grained concrete panels, carbonized cork, glass, bamboo walls, sleepers, and stainless steel panels create a rustic aesthetic, while concrete load-bearing wall panels form the foundation of the structure. The steel frame of the tree house, a major engineering challenge, enables the building to coexist harmoniously with nature and humanity.
