Project Overview
Covid-19 put companies and their digital product design teams in a crisis, as digital products went from a high-ROI but ancillary revenue to many companies’ lifeline. According to McKinsey, adoption of digital products doubled in the grocery industry, increased by 60% in the entertainment industry, and increased by 40% in the banking industry. Retailers from Home Depot to Dominos saved their revenue streams—and their employees—by making their digital products central. They needed to achieve digital transformation at scale and on a vastly compressed timeframe in order to survive.
This combination of factors put unprecedented pressure on design teams. They were suddenly responsible for more than ever before. They needed to design faster and at scale. Whole teams of people needed to be involved concurrently.
InVision is the digital product design platform powering the world’s best user experiences. Today our customers include 100 percent of the Fortune 100 and thousands of organizations including American Express, Adidas, Boeing, Ford Motor, Netflix, HBO, Ikea, Peloton, Slack and Virgin Atlantic. InVision enables creative collaboration across teams and geographies for improved speed to market and powerful business results. Never has that been as critical a need than in 2020, and we are honored to offer our platform, our community, and our principles (our content and learning) to the teams on design’s front lines.
Organisation
Project Brief
Velocity and scale define successful digital product teams. When a company needs digital transformation, it also needs InVision’s platform. Products are getting more complicated and solving problems requires more people, making the right collaboration tools critical. Our platform allows product teams and companies to be fast, iterative, and nimble. It allows talent to focus.
From Freehand to Design System Manager, Prototype, Craft, and Inspect, the InVision platform allows teams to ideate, prototype and test new ideas; create repeatable and streamlined processes in design, product, and engineering teams; and improve patterns and practices to move more efficiently from inspiration to production. This year, we released several major updates to empower organizations to move faster than ever on their innovation and digital transformation journeys.
In August, InVision announced its latest version of DSM. DSM gives users the power to scale a design system and create a unified workflow that makes teams more productive and consistent. As remote work has become the new normal, demand for Freehand—InVision’s digital, collaborative whiteboard—skyrocketed from design teams, engineering teams, and more broadly from HR, Marketing, and IT teams. InVision responded with an ongoing stream of updates that protect its simplicity while making it a more crucial tool as a product design point of origin. Specs, also launched earlier this year in our Cloud product, enables designers to create better documentation for front-end engineering teams. Spaces provide flexible working areas for teams, projects, versions, initiatives, and more. Updates to Spaces, in Cloud, were also launched this past summer.
Project Need
COVID-19 accelerated digital transformation and put unprecedented pressure on digital product design teams. They are now responsible for delivering more products and updates faster than ever before. They must design well, and at scale, always producing the next big thing. Design and development tools need to be flexible, inclusive, and respect official roles, even as roles change between projects, people, and workflows. Tools must facilitate the dialogue needed for collaboration without slowing the process. Design cannot work as a free-for-all, no matter how transparent and collaborative individuals may be. Streamlining the process is an improvement. Empowering multi-disciplinary teams, however, is the crux; it takes research, operations, marketing, legal, and more to consider the total experience. Successful companies need velocity and scale to stay ahead of the curve. Our new Design System Manager (DSM) allows teams to reuse components easily. DSM is a digital product development accelerator. Its adoption allows companies to expand workflow and brand consistency. DSM users get products to market 30% faster on average. 2020 saw major updates to our digital whiteboard, Freehand, which has more than doubled the number of users since March. Easier visual collaboration and the launch of popular templates like brainstorming and wireframing enabled that growth. We also released Specs, a space in our V7 product where designers and developers can collaborate, in Beta. Specs allows teams to share development-ready screens, give context, and discuss Jira issues. Specs also has curated user flows so it’s easier to get focused feedback, empowering scale.
User Experience
The Invision platform comprises a suite of products that individually and together take designs from ideas to development. The user experience across the platform is cohesive, simple, and beautiful. We believe that world-class design inspires the same, so to empower our customers to create products that users love, we give them exceptional design with exceptional UX. Here are the high points of the UX across our products:
The InVision Cloud is composed of products that make collaboration accessible. Prototype lets users create rich, interactive prototypes. The process is completed quickly when the bones of a good prototype are already at the user’s fingertips. Inspect bridges the gap between designers and developers. It allows both camps to see the product through their own lens, allowing them to collaborate and mitigate inconsistencies early and often. Freehand allows teams to work together in real-time on an infinite digital whiteboard. Users can select a blank canvas or take advantage of pre-built templates. The simplicity and flexibility gives users control of their own UX.
Our new Design System Manager (DSM) brings designers, developers, and collaborators into a shared workflow and single toolbox. Only DSM connects design and code, so teams can work smarter, faster, and in sync. Studio rounds out our suite with powerful screen designing, prototyping, and animating. Flexible components, and of course, collaboration tools, make it easy to level up quickly. Our products are connected with each other, and also with key outside app integrations, helping to streamline the product development process.
Project Marketing
The best marketing in the world is about creating products and experiences that people love. InVision is the platform used by more than 7 million people to build memorable digital product experiences that drive advocacy, virality, and bottom-lines. We do the same for our own marketing. In addition to allowing our platform’s long-standing success to market itself, we create leading education and community programs for digital product design and development teams.
For those who are looking to uplevel their organization’s design maturity, we diagnose challenges and opportunities with our Design Maturity Assessment. This year, we worked with teams as large as 100,000 to help them uplevel their skills and improve across all nine maturity dimensions.
We provide expertise in the form of our 2020 Webby-nominated Design Better Podcast, which as of this year is in the top 1% of all podcasts. Upcoming guests include luminaries in our field: Seth Godin, Brian Chesky, and John Maeda.
We publish books downloaded thousands of times. In the past year, we released three handbooks on the topics of Remote Design, the Business of Design, and the emerging field of Design Engineering. Our blog, read by 3 million, examines the craft, career, and culture of digital product design and its new seat of power in business.
Our films division creates and distributes documentaries about design and digital transformation. Our latest feature-length film, Squads, is being virtually screened by dozens of global companies alongside remote panels for groups as large as 3,500 viewers.
Project Privacy
Our products help our customers create digital products that are the lifeblood of their companies. A breach of their critical data and designs could put them at a terrible competitive disadvantage and expose products that are priceless. Accordingly, we take our customers’ privacy and security extremely seriously. The entire InVision platform uses the latest, industry-standard best practices to ensure our customers' critical work is never at risk. We also provide configurable security enhancements to each of our customers to help them efficiently adhere to organizational and compliance standards.

Digital - Dev Platform/Dev tools/framework
The current pick of the crop apps have moved from roll your own to accelerating by using platforms, platforms like yours. The winner of this category will be a platform or service that makes the life cycle go easier than other alternatives, it will power features that would have taken years to bring to market and allow digital designers to run and jump where if they had to do it themselves they would just be imagining their solution
