Project Brief

Since 2018, the Taitung County Government has been at the forefront of promoting astronomical tourism through its innovative initiative, the “Most Beautiful Starry Sky Selection.” In collaboration with renowned astronomers and the dedicated teams from 16 township offices, the program has successfully pinpointed 14 exceptional stargazing locations throughout the picturesque region of Taitung. This initiative not only strives to elevate the visibility of these stunning celestial sites but also hosts its inaugural starlit concert, enchanting visitors with the beauty of both music and the night sky.

Project Need

As the initiative evolved between 2019 and 2020, it transformed into a multifaceted program that encompasses a variety of enriching experiences. This expansion included the introduction of regular stargazing tours, where participants could immerse themselves in the wonders of the cosmos under expert guidance. Furthermore, the initiative offered professional training for aspiring guides, ensuring that visitors receive insightful and knowledgeable support.

Concert tours were organised to enhance the experience of stargazing, allowing attendees to enjoy musical performances set against the backdrop of a breathtakingly starry sky. One of the signature experiences that emerged from this program is the “Lie Down on the Road to Stargaze,” where participants are encouraged to lounge comfortably and absorb the majestic sights above. Overall, this comprehensive program aims not only to promote awareness of Taitung's stellar beauty but also to foster a vibrant stargazing tourism industry across Taiwan, inviting both locals and visitors to marvel at the wonders of the universe.

User Experience

From 2021 to 2024, the event embarked on a transformative journey towards sustainability and international alignment, marking a notable evolution in its approach. In 2021, it took a significant step by introducing ISO 20121 certification for sustainable event management. This initiative effectively integrated sustainability principles into every facet of the event planning and execution process, setting a new standard for responsible management. Building on this foundation, 2022 saw the launch of the “Starlight × Sustainability” theme, which encompassed the innovative 1% for the Planet initiative. Notably, the stage and entrance installations were thoughtfully designed using recycled materials, a move that garnered multiple international accolades and highlighted the event’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Moreover, throughout these years, the event progressively established rigorous Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) objectives. This comprehensive framework not only addressed environmental concerns but also prioritised social responsibility and effective governance, reinforcing its dedication to creating a positive impact. By 2024, the event would not only continue its commitment to sustainability but also enhance the branding of nighttime tourism. In this context, the release of the “Sustainable Listening Guide” served as a valuable resource, promoting practices for sustainable travel and further encouraging attendees to consider their environmental footprint. Through these initiatives, the event aimed to inspire a collective movement towards a more sustainable future.

Sustainability

In 2025, the event proudly marks its eighth year, artfully intertwining nighttime attractions and tourism resources through an array of enchanting starlit concerts and immersive guided tours. Participants are invited to journey into picturesque valleys, along breathtaking coastlines, and through serene fields, all while revelling in the beauty of the pristine night sky.

This year, the event is committed to environmental responsibility by establishing nine ambitious environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals, accompanied by 23 actionable implementation measures. Notably, it introduces carbon footprint auditing and continues its steadfast promotion of plastic reduction, recycling, and comprehensive sustainability education.

Furthermore, the event masterfully blends concerts, stargazing tours, and captivating local cultural performances, offering a rich tapestry of interactive experiences that engage the senses. Through years of innovative efforts, “Taitung's Most Beautiful Starry Sky” has become an emblem of the region’s local culture, sustainable tourism, and green economy. Ultimately, visitors are not only treated to a stunning star-filled sky but also have the opportunity to connect with cherished local traditions and embrace the essence of sustainability.
