Project Brief

The headquarters of Detech includes a group of connected towers for a family business including the original building located in a thriving up-and-coming part of Hanoi, the My Dinh district.

LAVA's competition winning design with partner Inros Lackner interpreted the different business branches of Detech [from environmental projects to motorcycles to biotechnology] as a group of buildings of different appearance and size, yet all connected, like the business itself.

Project Innovation/Need

The cave is a multilevel space that connects the buildings to the street and form a large Atrium to announce the building entry and create access and thoroughfare.

A public space is flanked by cafes restaurans and shops. A series of arched columns create a spatial sequence to allow connection between inside and outside.

A large water feature acts as a reflection pool, to create cool breeze and sound and architectural double reflection effect. At night it illuminates the atrium ceiling with ripples.

The Cave starts with a multilevel arch, then compresses the space and opens up again to create a dramatic spatial sequence. The vertical circulation occurs within the buildings, and above level 2 the buildings are connected with bridges.

The Ribs that cover the atrium are an extension of the Façade fins lining the tower building . They mirror the arches of the cave and together create a seamless architectural spatial experience.

The peaks are recognised from the outside as chamfered multilevel corners of each building. Internally they create multilevel terraced spaces as destinations for boards rooms, events, functions, or restaurants. They connect the verticality of the façade with the horizontality of the roof, and opportunities for green rooftops. Lit up at night they are a visual marker in the city.

Design Challenge

Importantly the ‘oldest family member’, the original Detech Tower, is incorporated into the design as the founding place of the company.

Sustainability

The Façade is based on flowlines which move across the building on all vertical and horizontal surfaces and create caves and valleys, peaks and rooftops while shading the façade.

They form an important part of the buildings technology , and make a statement for sustainability as architectural expression.

The valley is a dramatic special experience between 2 parts of each tower.

The office floors on both sides open up with green terraces into a light and airy Atrium space. The occupants enjoy fresh air, abundant vegetation, and birds singing as a counterpoint to the efficient internal spaces.

At the bottom of the valley coffeeshops, seating benches, planters, and water features provide a leisurely indoor outdoor experience. The terraces on both sides have glass balustrades and curtain plants and palm trees overgrowing the edges.

The atrium valley creates drama and destination for visitors and happy space for the inhabitants and acts as an important air, noise and lightfilter.

The greenvoids are multilevel breakout spaces within the office towers. By vertically connecting multiple floors they enable tenants to have connectivity between larger organisations and create a village in the sky feeling.

Spiral stairs and green helix installations connect the levels with each other and fill the airspace with drama and spatial diversity.

They act as a green buffer, a visual and actual relief from the office environment and a filter for light and air.

This award celebrates the design process and product of planning, designing and constructing form, space and ambience that reflect functional, technical, social, and aesthetic considerations. Consideration given for material selection, technology, light and shadow. The project can be a concept, tender or personal project, i.e. proposed space.
