Project Brief
The installation is a thoughtful response to the region's unique geological characteristics, including rare fossil shells and a wealth of stunning natural landscapes. It not only enriches the cultural tapestry of the area but also serves an educational purpose, fostering a deeper understanding of local heritage.
By seamlessly integrating bamboo weaving with natural materials, “Conch” Forest Sounded intricately reflects the rich cultural memory and the distinctive textures of the landscape. As a result, this compelling work conveys a powerful message: the notion of “being reborn in nature and inspiring the future through co-creation” resonates deeply, inviting all who encounter it to reflect on the interconnectedness of art, community, and the environment.
Project Innovation/Need
The design of this captivating artwork intricately weaves together geometric patterns inspired by the ever-shifting sea of clouds and the distinctive features of the local landscape. As a result, it emerges as a striking giant snail shell quietly nestled among the rolling hills. At its core, the main structure is meticulously supported by a robust galvanised steel pipe, renowned for its exceptional weather resistance, ensuring both durability and longevity.
Furthermore, the installation employs the exquisite technique of natural bamboo weaving, utilising carbonised bamboo strips. This approach not only renders the structure breathable and environmentally friendly but also deepens its connection to nature. Inside, visitors will find a thoughtfully designed space that invites them to pause, take in the breathtaking scenery, and enjoy a moment of tranquillity.
Design Challenge
The overall design conveys three profound levels of experience and meaning. First, it evokes a comforting sense of security for those who step into the interior space as they are gently embraced by the natural surroundings. As far as the second level is concerned, the conch-like shape serves as a powerful symbol of local memory, fostering a deep emotional connection between people and their environment. Finally, the artwork embodies the essence of local creation, representing rebirth from a cocoon and emphasising the vital importance of coexistence with nature. Through this engaging design, the installation invites all who encounter it to reflect on their relationship with the world around them.
Sustainability
This artwork is expertly crafted from locally sourced natural materials and employs traditional techniques, ensuring it is both environmentally friendly and sustainable throughout its entire process. In particular, we utilise galvanised iron pipes known for their exceptional weather resistance, which enhances the durability of the piece. Additionally, the bamboo sheets are finished with a carbonised treatment, adding both resilience and a unique aesthetic appeal.
Furthermore, these thoughtful selections not only extend the lifespan of the artwork but also significantly reduce its carbon footprint, thus promoting a commitment to sustainability. Ultimately, this creation exemplifies the spirit of green craftsmanship, merging artistry with environmental responsibility.
