Project Overview

Urban Grid are a well established Civil Contractor that engaged Dapper Apps to develop an app and internal business system to automate their business processes and improve the quality, and speed, of communications between the business administration and their contractors in the field. Working in a highly regulated industry segment (connecting residential dwellings to the gas mains) they have a requirement to capture a lot of information. The paper processes were extremely time consuming and difficult to administer, resulting in the development of a smart iPad app and custom enterprise system.

Project Brief

Urban Grid are a large Civil Contractor that needed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness or their operations, particularly the communication between the office staff and contractors in the field.

Urban Grid required Dapper Apps to create a system that saved their staff time, reduced errors and ultimately reduced costs too.


Project Need

As the major Western Australian contractor to ATCO Gas, Urban Grid receive a high volume of jobs from their client on a daily basis. With the old process these jobs would need to be allocated, all the relevant forms would be printed out and distributed to the staff. As the jobs were completed the Urban Grid administrators would need to manually enter the data in to ATCO’s system while checking for any errors – an incredibly time consuming process.

The need for improved efficiency, productivity and functionality was clear, something that could be addressed through the iPad app and web portal.

User Experience

Admin users and on-field staff use the system in the following ways:

- Integrate with ATCO’s ERP system to receive jobs automatically, and send completed jobs back to ATCO.
- Allocate jobs to contractors through the web system.
- Complete the jobs through the web system, moving to this being automated in future stages.
- Generate invoices for ATCO and Urban Grid’s contractors, with custom rates based on the type of job completed and the contractor.
- Generate business intelligence reports to improve scheduling and monitor productivity.
- Complete all forms on the app
- Upload images straight into the system
- Draw authorised signatures directly on the tablet
- View safe work instructions and other documentation

Project Privacy

The Urban Grid system is hosted on a secure Amazon Web Services server.

All data is stored in highly secure AWS data centres.

All data is fully encrypted and verified using SSL.




Business is obviously one of the biggest benefactors of the tech boom. Tech solutions refine business systems, cut costs and accelerate profits. This category rewards the savvy tools that transform business systems and processes.
