Project Overview
This project focuses on the planning and development of public facilities within a property in the bustling city of Shanghai. Initially designed as a residential unit, the space underwent a transformative decision after thoughtful discussions among the owners, who collectively agreed to repurpose it as a vibrant public area for community engagement and use. Embracing certain structural constraints, such as the existing wall panel design and the maximum allowable building height, the project reflects a creative reinterpretation of the space. The design team drew deep inspiration from the picturesque Suzhou River, allowing its fluid contours and natural elegance to guide their vision.

Project Brief
The team employed gentle, winding curves that soften the rigidity of straight lines, creating a harmonious flow throughout the area. By extending the walls, the designers crafted a sense of movement and rhythm that evokes the river's essence, seamlessly merging the structural limitations with an open and inviting ambience. This innovative approach not only mitigated the architectural constraints but also enriched the overall experience of the community space, making it a lively focal point for residents and visitors alike.
Project Need
The lobby's design draws inspiration from the rich tapestry of the local natural environment, creating an inviting and harmonious space. Adorned with warm wood tones and elegant stone floors, the area is illuminated by cloud-shaped lighting that casts a soft, ambient glow. This arrangement cultivates a calming and earthy atmosphere, perfect for rejuvenating weary bodies and minds.
Design Challenge
Departing from conventional square layouts, this project embraces fluidity with its extensive use of rounded shapes and graceful curves. Occupants are gently enveloped in a setting reminiscent of a winding tree hollow, evoking a profound sense of tranquillity and connection to nature. The bar area, masterfully crafted from natural wood with organic lines, serves as a serene oasis amidst the urban hustle. Here, residents can pause to unwind, fostering a space that encourages social interaction and relationship-building.
Seating in the social area is thoughtfully arranged along the walls, adding visual interest while maintaining an open and inviting walkway. This design choice enhances the sense of community, inviting both lively conversation and quiet contemplation. Continuing the earthy theme, the reading room offers a refuge with its warm, soft lighting and comfortable furnishings. This serene enclave not only provides a peaceful escape but also imbues the space with an artistic and cultural ambience, soothing the soul and enriching the experience of all who enter.
Sustainability
To create environmentally friendly, sustainable, and healthy public facilities, this project utilizes local materials. This approach not only lowers transportation and processing costs but also significantly reduces the carbon footprint associated with transported materials, thereby helping to protect the ecosystem. For decoration and construction, low-carbon materials and carbonized wood are primarily used.
These choices not only diminish carbon dioxide emissions but also provide residents with a healthier and more comfortable environment. Additionally, the project employs durable and easy-to-maintain building materials, such as granite, titanium-plated metal panels, solid cedar wood, and carbonized wood.
This reduces the likelihood of damage that necessitates replacement or repair, minimizing unnecessary resource waste. Furthermore, the spacious design and well-placed windows allow natural light and fresh air to enter, decreasing reliance on artificial lighting and air conditioning. This not only promotes energy conservation and carbon reduction but also improves indoor air quality, creating a healthier living environment for residents.
