Summary

As a paper artist, I find the whimsical world of paper sculpture deeply satisfying - not at all useful, but imaginative! I like to intrigue the viewer, interact on a humorous level, hold their attention for more than just a moment and enhance their wonder at how a piece has been made. I aim to tempt them to scrutinise my work more closely and therefore encourage them to delve into the many layered meanings.
It allows others to share in my unusual, but quaint world, with me.

Inspiration/Method

In making this piece, I wanted to experiment with paper, both as a 3D sculptural media and a form of bodily decoration, as well as a way to play with words and their double meanings. With this combination in mind, I developed the 'Choker' out of paper, using predominantly geometric shapes, the printed word, a little wire and a few sparkling beads.

Each of the chosen words featured on the baubles begins with the letter 'C' and references the definition of the negative way that humans can speak to/and are spoken to in life. These methods of communication can lead to the subconscious stifling of the spirit and therefore the 'choking effect'.

Design Challenge

This piece was created for an exhibition where I introduced a variety of my 3D paper sculptural works to the world for the very first time (rather than keeping them all hidden away in my studio)!!!!

It gave me the greatest of pleasure to see the public view this piece, and then to hear them laugh with wry amusement as they understood the word play and hidden meanings.
