Project Overview

The design team enhanced living conditions in elderly parents' homes by creating an open space connecting the dining and living room, widening the hallway, and using different materials to separate the kitchen and living room. Wooden elements connect the TV wall, flooring, and hidden doors, producing a sleek design. The master bedroom features wood and white elements with storage cabinets and a sitting area. The second bedroom has warm gray wallpaper, dark louvered wood, and hand-woven chairs. Indirect lighting enhances the overall quality of living.

Project Brief

A manifestation of "form follows function" emphasizes that design transcends aesthetic appeal—it's a pursuit of balance between utility and convenience. This interior design harmoniously integrates functional details with aesthetics, enhancing both the quality and convenience of life.

In spatial planning, various materials cleverly delineate the kitchen and living room within an open space, maintaining their distinct territorial attributes. The dining area backdrop showcases the homeowner's favorite cultural stone. The pure white brick texture, combined with tasteful décor and white floor-to-ceiling blinds, constructs a minimalistic American style.

To achieve visual harmony, the living room incorporates wood elements matching the television wall and floor, embellished with black metal accents for a neat design. The irregularly cut wooden wall, paired with two frameless, hidden doors of the same material, merges the pathways seamlessly with visual design, perfectly blending function with aesthetic. The double-sided cabinet design caters to both living room electronic storage needs and bedroom wardrobe requirements.

The master bedroom, imbued with an elegant, minimalistic atmosphere, uses a bright white color scheme offset by warm wood tones. The thoughtful storage cabinet design extends from the wardrobe to the sleeping area, permeating a tranquil, poetic atmosphere that exudes deep emotional warmth. The secondary bedroom, with its warm grey wallpaper, dark wooden blinds, and tactile woven chairs, cultivates a natural ambiance. This, in tandem with the comforting texture of the backdrop design and bedside lamp, invites a calming reprieve for the mind and body.

Project Innovation/Need

The aspiration for a spacious kitchen adorned with double sinks is a mother's grandest wish. With a linear axis layout to fulfill this wish in confined space, designers delineate the entrance and kitchen with a central island, forming an imaginary partition with a bone china pendant light. This setup allows the areas to coexist in harmony yet function independently. The open kitchen design accommodates twin sinks, facilitating a dream kitchen through unobstructed, spacious movement paths that permit the whole family to collaborate on delightful dishes.

Thoughtful detailing extends to the furniture, striking a balance between function and aesthetic. Small dividers on the desk prevent items from slipping off, while an open slot in the wardrobe is reserved for soiled clothes, with open hangers for recently worn outfits. An indent at the entrance facilitates elegant shoe changes. Safety grab bars are installed in the bathroom, ensuring user safety and convenience. These thoughtful details enhance everyday living, adding ease and comfort.

Design Challenge

In this case, the primary challenge is not merely material selection, but understanding and addressing the needs of older users, thereby creating a living environment suitable for the elderly. It requires a deep understanding of the habits, physiological needs, and comfort levels of older people to design spaces that meet their needs and preferences.

This design showcases an understanding of the changing needs of seniors as they age, including larger activity spaces, easier-to-use furniture, and safe environmental facilities. To meet these needs, the design incorporates easy-to-clean and slip-resistant flooring materials, reducing the risk of falls. Simultaneously, the dimensions of the walkways are expanded, providing ample space for potential use of mobility aids, ensuring safety and convenience.

The varying ceiling heights, due to beam and pillar structures, are smoothly linked by gentle curves to balance the visual scene, crafting a flowing, harmonious image, and framing daily life. This design is continued into the main bedroom with an extended lounge area, creating a relaxed and comfortable life framed in the scene. The open lounge area serves as a multi-functional storage space and the expansive window view fills the living space with sunshine, allowing continuous relaxation and enjoyment of the beautiful view. These detailed designs not only focus on aesthetics but also take into account practicality and convenience, providing residents with an enhanced quality of life.

Sustainability

Our design team maximized the advantages of natural light by creating an open public space with full-length windows, which allow light in and create a seamless visual experience. No dark corners, only illumination throughout.

The designers used durable, slip-resistant tiles in the foyer and kitchen to increase functionality and inspire a minimalist, modern atmosphere. The designers focused on details, making the space flexible enough to accommodate more than ten adults and children, yet still ideal for single living.

For the health and well-being of every resident, we chose Benjamin Moore's eco-friendly water-based latex paint. It's non-toxic, stain-resistant, and easy to clean. Just a quick wipe with a clean cloth is all that's needed to maintain a clean wall. Plus, it has long-lasting anti-mold and antibacterial properties that create a comfortable and healthy living environment.
