Project Overview

This project is located at a unique and privileged location in the picturesque Cao Tun Plateau, with broad views of the renowned Jiu Jiu Peak Mountain Range. Since the reconstruction following the 921 earthquake, Cao Tun has evolved into a densely populated area over the past 20 years. The site was originally an unused space characterized by exposed terrain and overgrown vegetation and trees. Additionally, it served as the only outdoor recreational space for the nearby high-density residential communities. Based on this historical context, reshaping this land into a novel outdoor open space has become particularly crucial.

Project Brief

The total area of this site is approximately 8,620 square meters, incorporating the area designated for the construction of 250 residential buildings while simultaneously preserving a spacious 6,200 square meters of outdoor space. This unique location has been transformed into a community ideal for families of three generations to share and enjoy living together, with a garden design aimed at inheriting both cultural and natural landscapes.
The garden retains the local agricultural culture with a long history, integrating elements, such as seasonal flowers and tea production, in order to preserve and pass down the cultural heritage to future generations.
Additionally, there is a special emphasis on the preservation and revitalization of the local forest in order to highlight the ecological characteristics of the natural habitat. Such a design not only provides residents with a pleasant living environment but also emphasizes the values of ecological balance and cultural heritage.

Project Innovation/Need

An undeniable future requirement is to provide a comprehensive age-friendly living environment in the garden, catering to the safety and diverse needs of different age groups.
In the entire area, considerations extend beyond the accessibility, and the spaces are cleverly integrated so that children, youth, working professionals, and the elderly can all be engaged and participate in the space together.
Such a design not only promotes intergenerational communication and collaboration but also cultivates a sense of belonging by fostering emotional connections, sharing values, and preserving environmental memories within the home.
By taking into account the distinctive seasonal activities in the local area, the garden intentionally preserves large green spaces to accommodate various seasonal events and activities.
It allows for the firefly-watching tea gatherings in springtime, the flower-viewing banquets in winter, the swimming and music concerts in summer, and the stargazing in the breeze in autumn.
The diversity of these community activities distributed throughout the garden offers residents rich and vibrant recreational experiences.

Design Challenge

1. Shaping a Multi-functional Space with Flexibility and Resilience:
The existing connecting roads near the site are too narrow. It is necessary to include the on-site disaster prevention and relief buffer spaces.
We broadened the lanes and simultaneously opened an entrance, creating a large oval-shaped plaza and lawn for easy vehicle access and providing a refuge space for the crowds. The garden also features a terrain with approximately a one-meter elevation difference. We used this advantage to design the spacious and meandering pathways. Gentle slopes are designed to meet the requirements for barrier-free accessibility. The central plaza is characterized by artistic structures, serving as a prominent landmark within the garden. The design of low or borderless flower beds not only enhances aesthetics but also creates a secure and reassuring environment.
2. Creating a Garden for Harmony Between People and Nature:
Surrounded by abundant greenery, the garden presents an ambiance reminiscent of the local subtropical forest. By blurring the boundaries of the forest, we extended the vision with endless vistas, making this garden a serene and elegant place that nurtures the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of residents.

Sustainability

The vegetation design predominantly features native trees, incorporating 300 additional trees and over 50,000 shrubs and flowers to create a multi-layered and diverse vegetation composition. With the in-depth site analysis of the wind patterns and sunlight exposure, we divided the vegetation into forest zones by season, aiming to establish a comfortable and pleasant microclimate. With this design, we successfully mitigated and lowered the temperature by 2°C, with a particular focus on regulating the high temperatures in summer, which is part of our continuous commitment to the mission of carbon emissions reduction on Earth. This vegetation arrangement not only considers the ecological environment but also establishes a green environment aligned with the principles of sustainable development, providing residents with a pleasant and health-promoting living space.

This award celebrates creativity and innovation in the use of practical, aesthetic, horticultural, and environmentally sustainability components, taking into account climate, site and orientation, site drainage and irrigation, human and vehicular access, furnishings and lighting.
