Project Overview

The Mochi Donut flagship store in Sydney occupies a prime spot at a bustling corner near Chatswood train station, attracting a diverse mix of pedestrians and consumers. It skillfully balances drawing attention while seamlessly blending into the neighborhood's vibrant fabric. Inspired by Mochi Donut's brand colors of pink and blue, the overall color palette, though slightly desaturated, fosters a cohesive and inviting ambiance within the space, inviting patrons to indulge in its delectable offerings.

The color scheme also incorporates plenty of natural wood tones, preserving the beauty of plywood's color and attractive cross-sections. Special attention was given to the design, aiming to present a light Japanese-style atmosphere that resonates with the origin of the Mochi Donut. The light yellow wood color and the contrasting theme colors of pink and blue complement each other harmoniously.

Project Brief

The storefront's logo embodies simplicity, with evenly spaced branding font for heightened visibility, complemented by a soft, warm yellow glow, ensuring a gentle yet noticeable presence. Additionally, the color palette extends to natural wood tones, preserving plywood's inherent beauty. Every detail, from sleek lines to refined contours, exudes understated elegance, evoking a tranquil ambiance akin to Mochi Donut's place of origin.

The shape of the counter follows the overall layout of the storefront, maximizing visibility for passersby due to its focus on takeout services. Clad in terrazzo, its surface exudes a sense of unity. Additionally, the glass canopy, designed without borders, offers patrons a clear view of displayed products, enhancing their visual experience.

Project Innovation/Need

The feature wall behind the counter boasts arch-shaped designs meticulously carved into plywood panels, ensuring a consistent motif throughout the design. At the focal points of these arches, wall lights adorned with glowing bulbs add a touch of radiance, echoing the illuminated color scheme of the storefront logo. This multifaceted lighting approach not only illuminates the space but also infuses it with a sense of dynamism and charm, captivating patrons as they explore the store's interior.

Design Challenge

The main challenge of this design arises from the need to preserve many existing structures while simultaneously speeding up the renovation process and rejuvenating the storefront. Therefore, we retained the original ceiling, entrance, and position of the door beam, incorporating them into a new cohesive design that seamlessly integrates with the existing structures.

Sustainability

Environmentally conscious materials, with plywood taking center stage, were predominantly employed, ensuring the preservation of the wood's innate color and pattern, thereby enhancing its overall natural aesthetic.
