Project Overview

The design proposal revolves around themes of "Urban Oasis," "Layered Herbs," "Life Bond," and "Weaving the Ancient, Building the New." It aligns with Jiangxi’s role as a key base for cultivating, producing, and extracting traditional Chinese herbs. The design employs a modern timber structure system, unfolding horizontally with a continuous, undulating surface. This approach not only captures the essence of herbal culture but also infuses a dynamic quality into the architecture. The project is explored in-depth from various angles, including urban integration, industrial synergy, functional architecture, green intelligence, and cultural environment. The goal is to create a future medical industry hub that showcases regional characteristics and embraces sustainable development.

Project Brief

Located in the Ganjiang New District of Nanchang, the project spans a total building area of approximately 320,000 square meters. Adhering to the design principles of "people-oriented, site-specific, safe and efficient, and green ecology," the development includes a pharmaceutical center, research and development center, medical equipment exhibition center, and logistics center. The primary focus is on addressing major and complex clinical issues, translating new technologies, products, and therapies, and continuously developing new in-house formulations and pharmaceuticals. This initiative aims to establish a first-class translational medicine research institute in China, seamlessly integrating industry, academia, and research. It will significantly accelerate the high-quality development of the health industry in the Ganjiang New District.

Project Innovation/Need

1. Contextual Adaptation, Integrating Urban Spatial Layout**

Carefully considering the city's regional spatial planning, including land use, riverine landscapes, and prevailing wind directions, the project establishes a basic layout of "industry in the east, research in the south, and amenities in the west." Each functional area is efficiently connected through landscaped corridors, creating an organic integration with the surrounding environment.

2. Industrial Synergy, A Green and Intelligent Future Medical Hub**

Breaking away from traditional research and industrial development models, this project seamlessly integrates medical research, public services, technological advancement, and urban innovation. Introducing the concept of industrial tourism, the landscaped corridors serve as catalysts for industrial synergy, providing unique spaces for industrial tours and establishing an essential platform for the development and exchange of future medical research and industry.

3. Weaving the Ancient with the New, Creating a Layered Cultural Environment**

In an efficient modern research and development setting, the project shapes the ambiance of Jiangxi’s cloud seas and Ganjiang’s landscapes through staggered volumes, smooth lines, and undulating surfaces. The landscaped corridors incorporate traditional timber structures, using suspended, tiled, curved, and wooden details to create a dialogue between traditional language and modern space, blending heritage with innovation.

Design Challenge

The project features two key exhibition areas utilizing innovative timber structural systems, aligning perfectly with the design philosophy of "green ecology, weaving the old with the new." Specifically, the auditorium roof employs a large-span timber beam and column system, incorporating hidden connection nodes to avoid exposed steel connections. This not only enhances fire resistance but also allows the timber elements to seamlessly integrate with the tiled roof, glass curtain walls, and timber grille ceilings, creating a harmonious architectural language.

Additionally, the canopy on the exterior of the exhibition center uses a timber interlocking system inspired by traditional mortise and tenon joints. This system features interlocking beams in two directions, weaving a dynamic and flowing architectural surface. This design not only showcases the modern application of traditional construction techniques but also enhances the structure's stability and aesthetic appeal, imbuing the building with vitality and artistry.

The application of these timber structural systems demonstrates advanced architectural technology and design philosophy while embodying the inheritance and innovation of traditional building wisdom. This ensures that the project achieves a high degree of functionality, aesthetic appeal, and ecological friendliness.

Sustainability

In the face of resource crises, the application of bio-renewable materials is a pressing issue for the construction industry. Timber is undoubtedly a superior choice. Timber structures have significant advantages in terms of energy consumption, carbon emissions, and environmental impact, aiding in the reduction of the construction industry’s carbon footprint and the achievement of green development goals. Timber components require minimal architectural decoration, as they inherently express the architectural language. The design seamlessly integrates the natural grain and color of wood, meticulously crafting the timber structure and its joints. This approach ensures structural safety while perfectly showcasing the modern, fluid architectural space.
