Project Overview

The first hand-made trail in Longgang District, Shenzhen——Dawoling Trail-Parent-Child Exploration Line, built in 2022, is adjacent to natural and human resources such as Longgang District Children's Park and Qinglinjing Reservoir. The total length of the countryside trail is about 5.8 kilometers, the experience time is about 3-4 hours, the highest altitude is 218 meters, and there are several exits such as Zhugushi Road, Lianxin Road, Luyuan, and Children's Park. Along the way, there are a Large Water Tank Platform overlooking the Qinglinjing Reservoir, the largest reservoir in Shenzhen, Humming Mystery Cave where you can experience the hum of human voices, Tree Bar where you can feel the fun of picnic, Valley of Winds where you can "wait for the wind to come, listen to the wind", Spider Valley where you can experience the spider hunting, and Barefoot Trail, Balance Challenge Panel, and natural science signboards that combines the vivid and interesting landscape. Dawoling Trail is an "act wildly"place extended by the Children's Park and is also the best place for urban parents to get close to nature and learn about nature.

Project Brief

Dawoling Trail is quite rich in natural resources and close to the Children's Park with many recreational resources. In the whole process of its design and construction, it fully mobilized social resources and invited partners with diverse backgrounds, such as the original users of the site, ecology experts, education experts, Qinglinjing Reservoir experts, as well as kindergartens, designers covering sensory experience, walking trails, science popularization, experience design, social organizations, public volunteers, etc. Participate in research, design workshops, trail building workshops, and other activities to contribute to the child-friendly parent-child mystery theme trail. After the completion of the project, we cooperated with various organizations to carry out walking activities on the trails and conducted a variety of social participation activities such as mountain cleaning, research, art exhibition, hiking training, planting, and greening, which added a healing way for the public to get close to nature and relax their body and mind.

Project Innovation/Need

It is built in the form of hand-made trails, mostly dirt roads, According to local conditions, designed suitable construction methods according to the actual needs of different sections, uses local materials in the environment, increase the recycling of materials, and reduces the damage to the environment, blend it into the mountains and rivers
The child-friendly trail provides a unique teaching scene for nature education and is committed to serving nature education. According to the current conditions of the site and the rhythm of the walking experience to design, for example, in the Spider Valley, the investigation found that the original is a very spacious sunken area, between the tree trunk covered with spider webs, thus we designed spider webs for children to climb on site., loved by children, but also become the source of power for children to walk the mountain.
Since its completion and use in 2022, it has brought a new inspiration to the industry. In 2023, the construction of child-friendly trails in various districts has attracted more citizens to set foot on the trails, which has strongly promoted the sustainable development of Shenzhen hiking trails.

Design Challenge

The construction adheres to the "three-zero principle", giving priority to materials in the mountains, such as withered wood, stone, and so on. However, due to the limited quantity of local materials, it is necessary to purchase similar natural ecological materials. However such materials are scarce on the market and need to be customized with manufacturers, which takes a long time to customize and distribute. Moreover, the route of the trail is long, and the purchased materials need to rely on manpower to carry them into the mountain, which not only costs manpower but also slows down the construction progress.
We have invested a lot of time in mountain, ecological, and population research, deep insight into the needs of mountains and outdoor people; strengthening the communication with the site, coordinating the site use and ownership and other related issues; design workshops and walking path repair workshops were held, which were jointly built through multi-party collaboration. Children's sensory experience is integrated into the design while taking into account the design considerations of natural education. The whole process is continuously adjusted and optimized, gradually achieving the original intention of the child-friendly trail.

Future Impact

The construction of the trails firmly practices the "three-zero principle", that is, to ensure zero growth of cement roads, zero impact on the natural environment, and zero damage to life species, and to minimize the damage to the environment through the construction of hand-made trails. In the construction process, priority is given to the local materials in the mountains, such as withered wood, stones, etc., and the recycling rate of local materials is increased to effectively reduce transportation costs and resource consumption.
A lot of time has been devoted to organizing teaching activities and holding a number of trail design and construction workshops to encourage the public and volunteers to participate in the construction and maintenance of the trails, gain an in-depth understanding of the construction process of the trails, clarify the materials used, and then convey the concept of trackless forest and environmental sustainability.
【Tǔ lì tǔ jí】Whose Home Is This? the campaign was launched on the trail. The art exhibition, with the help of garbage along the trail, adopts the form of "regeneration" artistic expression and vigorously advocates "zero waste hiking", aiming to curb the emergence of garbage at the root.
