Project Overview

Shandong First Medical University is one of the highest medical institutions in Shandong Province, covering an area of approximately 2600 acres with a planned construction area of 900000 square meters. The library, "Crown of Medicine", is the core of the campus, with a building area of approximately 70000 square meters.
The architectural form adopts a pure square volume, which is not only the bottom view of the etiquette square on the south side, but also the bottom view of the lake on the west side. It is also the surrounding core of the northern and eastern architectural complexes. The inner courtyard of the library is a pure circular shape, creating a rich space for communication.
"Crown of Medicine" creates a beautiful place for this medical university located in a poetic landscape garden. The architectural temperament is in line with local culture, with strong spiritual shock, spatial infectiousness, and regional consistency.

Project Brief

The design team strives to create a poetic place for student communication and interaction. Translate the spatial scale of local streets and alleys into the interior of the library, creating humanistic scale space with soft lighting in a giant library of 70000 square meters. The indoor space echoes the circular courtyard, providing a peaceful architectural atmosphere.
As the third space on campus, outside of teaching space and daily life space, the library needs to fulfill basic functions such as reading and study, also carries precious student community memories.
A space full of humanistic care, together with a grand narrative scene of modern medicine, plays an important role in educating, which will have a significant positive impact on students who pursue further education here - future doctors and medical researchers.

Project Innovation/Need

The design team introduces intelligent technologies such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things to achieve full coverage of RFID technology and create a comprehensive smart library. Based on the development and disciplinary direction of the school, the structure of literature and information resources has been optimized, forming a collection of literature resource systems with prominent disciplinary characteristics, multi-level, and multi-carrier.
Realize functions such as self-service borrowing and returning intelligent collection counting, three-dimensional precise positioning of books, 24-hour unmanned self-service borrowing and returning of books, and automatic book inventory in the library. The establishment of an intelligent seat and training room reservation management platform, big data display platform, and intelligent guidance service robot has greatly improved the utilization and sharing rate of resources in the museum. Enrich and improve off-campus access channels, making it convenient for teachers and students to access various literature resources. The cultural connotation and brand effect attract different communities to undertake high-quality and rich cultural activities.

Design Challenge

The school committee hopes to keep up with the times and reflect a sense of technology, futurism, and the power of inheritance in the library.
Advanced, efficient, and environmentally friendly new materials and technologies need to be used in construction to present the spirit of traditional streets and alleys: PVC lightweight partition walls, stainless steel thin-walled water pipe double compression connections, common plate flange air ducts, special-shaped aluminum curtain walls, ALC wall panel technology, hot-rolled high-strength steel bar application technology, etc.

Sustainability

Energy saving: The centralized air conditioning water system adopts a two-pipe variable flow primary pump system, and self-operated differential pressure control valves are installed at the connection between the return water branch pipes and the main return water riser on each floor. The fresh air ventilator adopts a full heat exchange type unit and an all-air air conditioning system, which can operate in a fresh air mode during the transition season.
Power saving: Select the low-loss and low-noise SCB13 dry-type transformer of the DYn11 wiring group. The low-voltage side is equipped with centralized reactive power automatic compensation, using an automatic switching device, and the power factor is maintained above 0.95.
Water conservation: Make full use of municipal water pressure. Floors, where municipal water pressure cannot be met, are supplied with digitally integrated fully variable frequency water supply equipment, achieving the goal of energy conservation and water conservation. Some floors are equipped with reclaimed water reuse systems, which are used for outdoor greening irrigation, road spraying, and garage flushing. All sanitary ware adopts water-saving sanitary ware.
