Project Overview

Xuzhou is famous for its Qin and Han culture, represented by ancient bells and drums, which are a prominent part of Chinese history. The overall design of Cordis Xuzhou is inspired by the calligraphy of painter Li Keran, which is made up of the following words: Oriental White, Ink over Colour, Craftsmanship, Clarity and Serenity, to create Xuzhou's "Artistic Urban Reception Hall". Cordis is the international luxury hotel brand of Langham Hotels. The word "Cordis" comes from the Latin word meaning "heart". It aims to provide guests with heartfelt service and authentic local experiences.

Project Brief

Design Inspiration Source: “Ink over Colour” - the space concept of interior decoration: In the preface to the Exhibition of Li Keran's Chinese Paintings, Wu Zuoren said: “The world of art is vast, and he is unique in his craftsmanship of landscapes. The peaks are hidden, the clouds and smoke are swallowed, which is an artistic conception that ancient artists had never achieved. The light and shadows of the trees show that ink is better than paint, and a realm is created to push the boundaries of the world". The artwork presents an abstract image in the form of a few strokes of black ink, with a red background that makes the black ink stand out even more, echoing the theme of “Ink over Color”.

The artistic paintings in the private dining rooms feature crape myrtles embellished with ginkgo leaves. The artwork is created using abstract techniques and colors to match the style of the interior.

Xuzhou paper-cut, as a form of folk art, is widely spread in Dengzhou, Xinyi, Pei County, Feng County, Yunlong District, Gulou District, Quanshan District and Jiawang District of Xuzhou. Inspired by Xuzhou’s traditional handicraft of paper-cut, the artwork is carved into an artistic ornament rich in Chinese aesthetics. Xima Terrace is one of the oldest ruins in Xuzhou. According to the topography of the hill, the terrace gradually rises and is well arranged. The artwork is inspired by the side eaves of the Xima Terrace and presents the image artistically.

Project Need

The overall design is inspired by the calligraphy of Mr Li Keran, a painter, which is made up of the following words Oriental White, Ink over Colour, Craftsmanship, Clarity and Serenity, to create Xuzhou's "Artistic Urban Reception Hall".

Corridor Wall DecorationInspiration Source: View of Yunlong Park:Park, with its misty lakes and layered mountain colors, has scenery everywhere. The artwork extracts the beautiful scenes in Yunlong Park, from the lotus in the lake, to the willows along the shore, to the ginkgoes and sequoias along the roadside, to the reeds.

Lobby & Lobby Lounge: Oriental White
As soon as you enter the hotel, you are immersed in an oriental aesthetic. The lobby of the hotel is designed with Mr Li Keran's masterpiece "Oriental White" as the theme, and the elements of the Xuzhou landscape run through the entire lobby space. The main background of the lobby is inspired by "Spring Cow Picture", in which a cowherd boy is playing in the landscape, depicting the beautiful scenery of Xuzhou through contemporary art. In the elegant environment of the lobby lounge, you can enjoy a lazy afternoon with a pastry and a cup of coffee.

Design Challenge

Ming Court (Chinese Restaurant): Ink over Colour
Descending a staircase decorated with the leaves of the ginkgo, Xuzhou's city tree, you enter Ming Court, a Michelin-starred sister restaurant. The restaurant's design concept is "ink over colour", with large floor-to-ceiling windows offering stunning views of Dalong Lake.

Ballroom & Meeting Room: Craftsmanship
Stroll through the flexible and spacious banqueting and meeting space, which includes an 800 square metre deluxe column-free Grand Ballroom. The overall design of the ballroom is based on the concept of 'craftsmanship' to create a high-quality wedding banquet.

Guest Room: Serenity
A total of 269 elegantly designed guest rooms and suites are available for guests to choose from. The rooms are themed 'Serenity' and feature Chinese ink and watercolour, a return to oriental aesthetics. New shower facilities, soft lighting effects and rich decorative paintings create a comfortable and elegant space for guests, enhanced by the beauty of Dalong Lake.
