Project Brief

Inspired by the layout of Song Dynasty architecture, this project adopts a progressive sequence— entrance, antechamber, and main hall— to connect different functional areas, presenting a multi-layered, independent, interconnected spatial arrangement. The conversation area, breaking conventional arrangement, uses large-scale glass windows that seamlessly link the interior space with outdoor mountains and lakes, immersing users in a natural landscape-like environment.

Through a fusion of traditional and modern elements, this project continues the asymmetrical roof typical of Song Dynasty architecture, complemented by traditional Eastern design elements such as roof tiles, harmoniously blending the elegant fluidity of ancient architecture with the functionality of modern interior spaces.

The large folding screen— featuring bamboo joint elements that symbolise modesty— serves as the main backdrop and echoes the poetic Chinese landscape murals, fully presenting modern aesthetics infused with Eastern sensibility.

Project Innovation/Need

This project integrates the cultural essence of the Song Dynasty with the beauty of nature, transforming these abstract concepts into immersive and experiential settings. This project introduces a sequential spatial layout typical of the Song Dynasty architecture, reimagining conventional floor plans through a progressive arrangement of spaces, from the entrance and antechamber to the main hall.

It also incorporates the lines and roof tiles drawing from the Song Dynasty architecture, along with bamboo joint-featured decoration elements to set a serene yet elegant atmosphere. In addition, it applies landscape murals to seamlessly blend the indoor space and the outdoor mountains and lakes, placing users as if within the natural landscape.

Design Challenge

To create a Song-style modern space, the designer employs a mix-and-match approach to combine Song Dynasty architectural forms and characteristics with contemporary materials and techniques, resulting in a space that resonates with modern aesthetic needs.

Continuing the Song-style asymmetrical roof, this project integrates the sleek lines typical of Song Dynasty architecture with plain roof tiles. It applies a distinctive bamboo joint element-adorned folding screen whose upright posture and top curved ceiling form a striking contrast, with deep green tones and metallic textures evoking a unique contemporary elegance.

Large-scale landscape murals are introduced to integrate the profound and poetic depth of mountains and rivers into the space, embodying the aesthetic of " A painting at hand captures the landscape a thousand miles away" and conveying the cultural depth of Song-style landscape art.

Sustainability

This project utilises low-carbon materials such as FSC-certified wood panels and bamboo fibre composite panels, which are recyclable while ensuring aesthetic appeal and durability. Moreover, large-scale glass windows are used for maximum natural daylighting, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and aligning with eco-friendly practices.
