Project Overview

Unlike traditional American style decor, this interior blends modern linear elements with soft curves to create a richer and layered space. Storage solutions are seamlessly integrated into the interior, fostering a sense of visual clarity and order. Through a thoughtful interplay of light and dark tones, the space is defined by a rational contour, while wood blinds, LED panels, and indirect lighting work in harmony to cast a soft, even glow throughout the space. The direction of light and the way shadows move throughout the day can alter the atmosphere, creating a dynamic and rich environment.

Project Brief

Drawing inspiration from the interplay of light, shadow, and materials, this space distils the essence of understated elegance, capturing the gentle nuances of natural light. The design seeks an equilibrium between architectural structure and the rhythm of daily life. In the communal area, an open-plan layout fosters the seamless flow of light, fluidity, and connectivity. Empty space around and between furniture pieces can create a sense of visual breathing room. Finishes and materials gently mirror the understated moments of everyday life.

Project Innovation/Need

Rooted in classic American style, the space incorporates modern elements to sustain a sleek yet mellow ambience. The expansive storage cabinets on the TV wall feature clean, neat lines that seamlessly conceal a door leading to the children’s room.

A clever S-shaped staggered structure allows the area behind the TV to function as additional storage for the children’s room, maximising space efficiency while preserving a sense of simplicity and continuity. The living room is softly lit by an LED panel, designed to emulate a skylight and cast a soft, even glow throughout the room.

Design Challenge

Set against a light-toned backdrop, a thoughtful interplay of contrasting textures prevents the space from feeling flat or boring. The flooring showcases antique-inspired wood planks with softly brushed finishes, creating a compelling story of time's passage. Hand-troweled finishes on the kitchen island lend the space a quiet sophistication, enriched by subtle textures and warmth.

Meanwhile, the wall behind the bookshelf is clad in large tiles that echo the look of travertine, subtly revealing the stone’s natural veining. Strategically placed black inlays define the visual composition, adding clarity and nuanced depth to an otherwise restrained environment. Negative space acts as a visual frame, drawing attention to the elements it surrounds and enhancing the visual tension.

Sustainability

Environmental sustainable design aims to improve the safety of the house and meet the needs of occupants, whilst at the same time reducing negative impacts on the environment.

Low-formaldehyde, non-toxic, renewable or environmentally certified materials are used to minimise indoor volatile emissions. The public area maximises natural light and ventilation to reduce electricity consumption and save energy. To extend the life cycle and conserve resources, furniture pieces are made of wear-resistant and durable materials.
