Project Overview

The project is located in the historic Chinese city of Nanjing, adjacent to Longshan Forest Park and Pukou Riverside Park, covering an area of 133,000 square meters. The design adheres to the community concept of "ecological sustainability + artistic empowerment + social activation" for symbiosis and integration, creating a super art creative park community above nature. It continues the artistic interpretation of local natural textures such as "hills, forests, riverbanks, and sandbars", combines the classic gardening concepts of the East and the West, creates a new paradigm of life aesthetic space full of vacation feeling and artistry, integrates the design creativity and operation concept of art social interaction, and builds a diversified life scene integrating ecology, art and vitality.

Project Brief

Design of the Super Art Creative Park above Nature: The design creates a super park community through the artistic translation of natural landscapes, the reconstruction of social scenes in public spaces, and the highly sticky design of operational activities. By extracting local natural landscapes such as hills, forests, riverbanks, and sandbars, it transforms natural images into perceivable landscape languages through form translation, material narration, and functional integration.

Combined with the layout of traditional Chinese courtyards, Western garden forms, and modern resort hotel spatial experiences, it forms four major themed spaces: Central City, Qingchuan, Nanshan, and Jiangchao. It also integrates diverse interactive artistic and social activities to build a super park community that is “perceivable, participatory, and co-creative.”

Project Innovation/Need

Artistic Creative Park Community: The design integrates artistic creativity into the life of the park community. Guided by the concept of "boundless creation, universal participation, and natural symbiosis", it breaks the traditional enclosed community form and constructs a matrix of multi-functional art social spaces.

It sets up spaces such as flowing art corridors and natural art theatres, and reserves 10%-15% of "flexible creative land" to meet the needs of more types of community activities in the future. Regularly organizing and planning the "Community Art Festival", including art workshops, theme markets, parent-child creative clubs and other activities, allows residents to inspire emotional resonance among neighbors and precipitate community culture in the process of appreciating, creating and sharing art, so as to achieve the emotional upgrading from "residential area" to "art park community".

Design Challenge

The design is based on the concept of “ecology-first spatial construction + art-oriented operation for all ages.” It seamlessly integrates the rich life content of the Super Artistic Conception Park into the natural ecological base.

By using native plant communities and combining them with thematic, interesting scientific knowledge, it constructs a multisensory garden laboratory, a natural dyeing workshop, and a community garden, among other diverse, ecological and artistic vibrant spaces. This allows artistic and creative life to be more perfectly connected to nature. Residents can achieve integration across all ages and sharing of art by participating in interactive activities with nature, truly realising the concept of a super artistic life on the basis of nature.

Sustainability

Landscape Ecological Community: The site terrain is combed to construct a gradient drainage system of "high-altitude confluence–terrace purification–low–lying storage and regulation". Native adaptive plants such as Chinese tallow and camphor are used, combined with a 4-kilometre winding stream to create a visible and walkable characteristic rain garden.

This efficiently achieves rainwater collection and self-purification, and the purified rainwater is used for garden greening irrigation and landscape water replenishment. Meanwhile, the dual effects of water circulation and plant transpiration also contribute to the microclimate regulation of the community, forming a low-maintenance and high-resilience sustainable landscape system.
