Project Overview

Four-Sea Market is located on the Shenzhou Peninsula in Wanning, Hainan, at the transitional boundary between the resort area and the natural beach.
The Site faces the beach to the south. The Letao Bay here is a treasure trove for surfing. To the north of the site is the coastal road leading to the Peninsula, and on the other side of the road is the Alamona commercial town and a cluster of hotel apartments. The hustle and bustle of the resort district and the poetic charm of the sea converge here. It seems reasonable to build a commercial and cultural tourism center for a peninsula resort area in such a location. Four-Sea Market integrates various functions such as tourism support, shopping, entertainment and food in a three-story volume, creating a relaxed and boundless living space for "Islanders".

Project Brief

The project is the first phase of the commercial center on the site. The building has a total floor area of 3800 square meters, with 3 floors above the ground and a height of 15M. The site occupies a favorable terrain at the intersection of the main roads on the island. Create a new urban space at the street corner of the tourist town, with a strong architectural landmark. The space attracts people to enter and guides them to the main sea-viewing area on the south side.

Visitors to the beach in Wanning seek the expansive openness of the ocean as an escape from the city, embracing nature and the sea breeze. We envision to place a comfortable and relaxed multi-layered platform between the city and the beach, creating rich outdoor Spaces on the platform and extending the indoor space to the outdoors. The horizontal lines of the decks and the staggered outdoor platforms meet the operational requirements of various leisure and dining formats, while also integrating the building into the seaside skyline.

The staggered building volumes create multiple semi-outdoor spaces on the ground floor and the upper floors, which are interconnected, creating a continuous and dynamic spatial flow. Escalators, steps and green slopes break the boundaries between floors. People wander among various platforms, just like strolling through three-dimensional streets.

Project Innovation/Need

Located approximately 200 meters from the coastline, the project offers excellent sea views from the second floor and above. A landscaped slope facing the sea connects the second and third floors. Trees and shrubs are planted along the steps, creating cascading layers of greenery that rise with the slope. Here, people can rest and linger on the verdant slope, listening to the waves and gazing at the ocean. This space is located at the core of the project where the low deck leads to the high deck, where green leaves, sea breeze and sunlight converge. Steps are also set up from the third floor to the rooftop viewing platform and the sunset bar, which is also the end point of the entire spatial journey.

Four-Sea Market takes the walking and wandering between multi-level platforms as the design starting point, emphasizing the extension of indoor and outdoor Spaces, permeate the architecture and commerce to blend into daily life. It is to become a carrier of an ideal coastal life by establishing connections between people, business, greenery and the sea.

Design Challenge

As the first-phase of a large project, the design of the project not only needs to maintain a level of independence, but also leaves space for interconnection, interweaving and growth for the construction of the second phase. The project should reserve intercommunication interfaces for future expansion to form a naturally extensible spatial system.

It is crucial to maintain the flexibility of separate operation for different functions assembled on the platforms. From the Starbucks and Pizza Hut on the ground floor, the "Hainan Gift" (a cultural concept retail space) that carries the memories of Hainan, the "Manning Store" that offers one-stop shopping for island sports, the "LOFI SKY Restaurant and Bar" and community canteen on the second floor where you can enjoy a drink and the sea view, the "Manning Island Store" on the third floor, to the sunset bar on the rooftop. As the project continues to develop, the lifestyle offerings at Four-Sea Market are becoming increasingly vibrant. Whether seated outdoors or at an indoor table, everyone can enjoy the ocean views, inviting both tourists and island residents to wander and linger here.

Sustainability

To practice the concept of ecological sustainability, the project systematically incorporates diverse sponge facilities to build an efficient rainwater management system: sunken green spaces (to retain and infiltrate rainwater), rain gardens (with ecological purification and landscape functions), permeable pavements (grass-planting bricks to enhance surface permeability), and green roofs (to reduce runoff and regulate microclimate). Through the synergistic effect of these sponge facilities, the project effectively controls rainwater runoff, achieves the core target of 70% of rainwater being absorbed and utilized on-site, reduces the ecological impact of urban construction, and optimizes the visiting environment. Leveraging its advantages in ecological design and resource utilization, the project has been awarded the Two-Star Green Building in China's Green Building Evaluation. Its sustainable design concept and practice have gained professional recognition, demonstrating its benchmark value in green development.
