Shortlist

Project Overview

There stands a picturesque park in Taiwan called the Shengli New Village Victory Star V.I.P. Zone, which is home to an impressive historic building. This one-of-a-kind site encompasses the Shengli New Village and Chenggong District of Chongren Military Dependents' Village. The park is divided into three main areas, namely the Shengli New Village, Chongren Chenggong District, and the Legacy Park. The latter is a rare landscape of historical architectural clusters, exuding an aura of traditional grandeur. Despite its location amidst modern streets, the park's lighting planning aims to showcase the harmonious blend of modern life and past cultures. Visitors can bask in the unique experience of crossing a street and immersing themselves in the amalgamation of ancient and modern times and spaces.

Project Brief

The local government in Pingtung is making strides to build a new lifestyle and creative industry platform by gradually developing its foundation. They prioritize planning for regional characteristics, implementing visual recognition systems, and introducing various business types. Additionally, the government has devised a plan called "Pingtung Shengli Xingcun Creative Life Park Lighting Environment Planning and Design" to improve the park's overall nighttime lighting design. This includes designing and planning the nighttime lighting for the 96 units from the Japanese Colonial Era Officer Dormitory Complex, the park's alleyways and walkways, and the planting area around the plaza. The aim is to showcase the historical texture of the site at night, enhance the park's environmental ambiance, increase pedestrian’s safety from daytime to nighttime, connect the tourist attractions around the train station and business district, and promote the nighttime economy.

Project Innovation/Need

The park boasts a distinctive checkerboard-style building layout that creates a fascinating landscape of intertwined lanes and alleys. For added safety and improved visibility during nighttime hours, the park has been adorned with warm lighting that not only reduces visual clutter but also accentuates the inviting warmth of the Japanese family house as well as the surrounding area. This lighting solution further sets the park apart from nearby commercial and residential areas, which typically feature high color temperature lighting.

Design Challenge

As for the Japanese-style dormitory complex, the team uses a comprehensive wire-light decorating method to apply to the façade of the building at night. Considering the scale of the street and the pedestrians, and adhering to the principle of "seeing the light and not seeing the light," the light is directed toward the façade of the dormitory complex, which not only avoids generating a glare situation, but also avoids the light fixtures from being subjected to rain and exposure to the sun by hiding the wires from the eaves, which greatly enhances the degree of safety and the lifespan of the light fixtures.

Due to the installation of magnetic locks in the lighting fixtures, the number of drilling holes required has been significantly reduced. This has made future maintenance much easier, while also minimizing damage to the historic building. The Japanese-style dormitory boasts uniform and soft lighting that creates a serene and calming atmosphere. On the other hand, the Legacy Park and the Landscaping Art District use dramatic accent lighting to highlight the heritage and unique characteristics of the artworks. This creates strong contrasts between brightness and darkness, which is sure to attract visitors' attention. Moreover, necessary areas have been equipped with lighting shades to prevent any glare that may disrupt the tourist experience.

Sustainability

In an effort to bring a touch of Japanese culture to our dormitory, the design tean has developed a marvelous walkway lighting system that emulates the warm glow of the Taiwanese version of Japanese-style architecture. The towering beams that adorn the walkway are reminiscent of the iconic roofs found in traditional Japanese-style residences. Complementing the warm lights and towering beams, the lighting system integrates bamboo walls, bamboo fences, and bamboo household items commonly found in Japanese-style homes and traditional family villages. This not only creates a warm and inviting atmosphere but also helps to preserve the environment, as the team has opted for eco-friendly, recycled bamboo fibers to cover the lamp poles, creating an elegant appearance. Moreover, the lighting fixtures themselves are low-energy-consuming], highly efficient LED lighting fixtures, which not only conserve power but also serve to highlight the historic texture of the architecture and landscape. This marvelous system is sure to create a warm and inviting ambiance for all who visit.
