Project Overview

Khai Liew recently approached us to update a site we had originally designed for him in 2007. We wanted the updated site to be an experience - something we felt the original site achieved quite well. But for the updated site we wanted to shift the focus - to elevate the online experience and the works beyond the mercantile.

Project Brief

Frost first met furniture designer, Khai Liew, in 2007 through our collaboration with Object Gallery on the Freestyle exhibition (new Australian design for living) in which Khai was exhibiting. Our brief at the time was to create a website that is ‘visually arresting but timeless, sharp but with warmth’ - all things that could be said about Khai Liew’s work. In 2012 he approached us again to update the site we originally had designed for him in 2007.

Project Need

Khai’s background is an interesting one, having spent over 20 years as a specialist valuer, conservator, and growing up in Hong Kong and Malaysia before moving to Adelaide. These influences are reflected in his work, which often combines the beautifully simple with the intricate. The layered, ‘concertina’ design of the website reflects the ‘layers’ of influence and inspiration behind each piece and the navigational structure effortlessly guides the user through the site.

Design Challenge

Sustainability
