Project Overview

Amid the shimmer of water and the gentle embrace of mountain light, why seek clarity in a mere stream, As tree shadows dance and daylight flickers, the obscured reflections turn water into a natural canvas.

The creative concept behind the Ningbo Shuiyin Spa project is a deep exploration of the poetic, often overlooked attributes of water, using aquatic landscapes to frame scenes and encapsulate a leisurely, relaxed experience within the ever-changing play of light upon water.

The project is situated atop the rooftop of a local commercial complex, featuring an expansive terrace. Leveraging the unique attributes of the site, the designers ingeniously transformed the neglected terrace, integrating vegetation and water features to forge an intimate garden and water system, thus enhancing the spatial depth. This setup invites visitors to enjoy the breeze and water views as if meandering through a garden, amplifying the fluidity and enjoyment of the experience. Brushing aside the lingering mist and the hustle of daily life, one transitions from the outdoor terrace through the water features and steps into the tranquil space of the Shuiyin Spa.

Emphasizing the concept of "hidden," the designers use "water" as both a narrative thread and an emotional anchor, veiling the space behind water features to enrich spatial layers and inject a sense of mystery, thus rendering the space tranquil and sublime through the infusion of water.

Project Brief

From the northeast, streams make their way to the sea; from the southwest, grass and trees return to the forest. The rustling tree shadows obscure worldly distractions, while the sparkling ripples reflect lush greenery. The melodious strains of Yue opera drift from afar, harmonizing with the shimmer of water. The fluidity of water and sway of shadows together compose a serene melody. The design blends antique elements with contemporary design, revealing a novel charm while exuding the gentle grace of Eastern aesthetics, culminating in a unique and innovative spatial experience.

Streams bury beneath sands, human traces vanish among flowers and trees, and mountain lights retreat behind rocks. "Karesansui" (dry landscape) embodies the ultimate expression of "hidden," using sand and stones to mimic ripples and tree shadows to evoke garden scenes. It expands the imagination, constructing spectacular vistas within the spiritual realm and imbuing the space with profound spirituality.

The designers sparingly employ this artistic technique in the spatial design, allowing the smooth, simple surfaces to naturally bear nature's imprints, concealing myriad phenomena within the design. Stepping into the foyer is akin to encountering a flowing spring or celestial light cascading down. The designers use sheer curtains to depict flowing water, their light texture resembling rushing streams, fluttering gently in the breeze, perfectly capturing the scene of "a silent spring cherishing a gentle flow." Here, one’s thoughts drift with the water, time, and light pause, placing one in a secluded mountain retreat, achieving complete relaxation and a unity of self and surroundings.

Project Need

Utilize lighting and shadow effects to enhance the beauty and atmosphere of the space while providing a unique visual experience. By incorporating techniques such as overhead lighting and pleated window drapes, the design integrates light and shadow effects with spatial design to create a vibrant and poetic environment. The design also incorporates principles of environmental protection and energy efficiency, ensuring high-quality visual and functional outcomes while meeting sustainability requirements. Plants and water features are cleverly introduced into the interior to create a relaxing environment that combines natural ambiance with modern comfort.

Design Challenge

Transforming the abandoned terrace into a visually appealing and functional SPA area requires a clever renovation and spatial integration based on the existing structure. It involves integrating traditional aesthetics (such as classical elements) with modern design concepts and facilities to ensure a harmonious blend of both. The challenge is to express the "hidden" poetic essence of water through design, making the space both rich in traditional cultural depth and aligned with modern demands for comfort and functionality.

The designer introduces plants and water features to create a garden-like water system, enhancing the spatial layers and visual comfort, while also blending flowing spatial sensations with the natural environment. Traditional elements are skillfully incorporated into modern design through refined details and innovative decorative techniques, presenting classical aesthetics while showcasing unique modern design qualities. By using the changing water features, the interplay of light and shadow, and spatial layout, the design creates metaphorical and symbolic effects, demonstrating the poetic beauty and tranquility of water.

Sustainability

The project is not overly complex modeling, modeling the overall simplicity and competence, the use of materials such as micro-cement, terrazzo, and other materials are environmentally friendly and easy to construct, low-carbon and environmentally friendly, which contributes to the rapid landing of the project. Without numerous lighting arrangements, it saves costs and reduces power consumption.

The large-scale water landscape not only meets the requirements of decorative effect but also utilizes the characteristics of the specific heat capacity of water to effectively reduce the temperature of the terrace and roof, which reduces energy consumption. The water system is also set up with a filtration system, which can collect and utilize the natural rainfall to create a water landscape, creating a breathing space with constant oxygen, constant temperature, and humidity, which gives people a good sensory experience. Meanwhile, we adopt real green plants in the interior, which are both beautiful and green, giving the space natural vitality.
