Project Overview
At the initial stage of the project, the interior design team, along with the teams responsible for the architecture and landscape, discussed the final overall effect of the project. The design team intended to create a space where visitors can enjoy a balanced and integrated experience no matter where they stand, to appreciate views from the exterior to the interior, and then from inside to outside. At the same time, the interior space which possesses an architectural sense naturally enriches the visual atmosphere, and brings a distinctive and brand-new effect to Shimao Haixia’s real estate project. The project is located at Fuqing City, Fujian Province.
The building featuring a geometric structure stands on a clear water surface. When night falls, the bright lights in the interior are reflected by the water. Based on the conditions of the existing site and building, the design team created the openness of the interior space and the fluidity of the exterior space. Meanwhile, through the deconstruction, remodeling and integration of the multi-dimensional space, the humanities, art, life culture, and commercial atmosphere are “revitalized, retransformed and recreated” to produce a unique artistic space.

Project Brief
The lowered height of the entrance creates an intimate spatial scale, and the low-saturation material colors of gray, white and brown provide visitors with an obvious and soothing impression. As art is the reflection of nature in the human world, the undulating geometric shapes on the wall surface, the irregular form of the reception desk, and the staggered artistic light fixtures suspended in between, are exactly the design team’s deconstruction and regeneration of the undulating shape of mountains located near the project. At the same time, it also resembles metaphorically the geometric blocks with a diamond-like sparkle.
On the right of the entrance, a unidirectional large-scale space that is slanted comes into view, introducing another volume. Drawing on the basic concept of combining topography and architectural form, the interior design uses the geometric blocks formed by the integration of light, color and sense of sequence to embody the main theme of the overall space. Following the refraction of light at different moments, subtle rhythmic changes can be observed in the space, whilst the transparency of the glass curtain wall also introduces the refraction of light and shadows from the outdoor water surface into the interior. The wonderful effects show that the interior design team fully considered the concepts of architecture and landscape design, so that visitors can enjoy a mysterious experience and wonder where architecture and landscape begin and where the interior space ends.
Project Need
1. For the interior furnishings, the design team once again boldly used large-scale furniture fusing the ideas of geometric forms and mountain shapes. Sofas not only have practical use but also serve as art installations and even embody a regeneration of the overall space. Because of such a design concept, the project enjoys a perfect combination of architecture, landscape, and the interior space.
Design Challenge
1. The first challenge was balancing design suggestions of different disciplines, including interior, architecture and landscape. For meeting the need of display, the architecture has glass curtain walls on two sides facing the main road as it’s located at the corner. And the overall building presents a unidirectional slanted spatial form, which brings troubles for the next phase of interior design. That is how to express the design appeal without destroying the integrity. Therefore, balance, integration and regeneration are the best choice of design.
2. The second challenge was learning about the client’s demands for the presentation way of the project. The client hoped to make the space as sales center at the early stage to demonstrate the diversity of residential and commercial businesses and others. In such context, the single building is supposed to satisfy the basic demands for residence sales, and meanwhile add a commercial atmosphere, so as to generate totally different visual and psychological experiences for visitors.
Sustainability
The single building is a supporting architecture of the property development project. After the sales period was finished, it would serve as a part of iconic commercial buildings along the street at the later operation stage. In this way, the commercial decoration of the overall project would be reused. And as Fujian Province boasts abundant stones, large areas of the flooring are made of local stones so as to reduce cost. Moreover, the shelves for display also use composite materials, trying to reduce damage to the forest and protect the ecological environment.
