Project Context

By allowing you to leave behind your smartphone, the Light Phone 2 encourages you to spend quality time doing the things you love the most, free of distraction. We call this 'going light'.

Project Innovation

More reliable, durable, and practical than its predecessor, the Light Phone 2 has 4G LTE connectivity. Through its Indiegogo crowdsourcing campaign, the product is also proposing a few new tools including an alarm clock, directions, a rideshare partnership, weather reports, voice command and playlist capabilities.

Light's OS, which works in direct contrast to the increasingly convoluted and confusing OS of current smartphones, uses a few thoroughly implemented tools, with two physical buttons to scroll through your customized 'toolbox'. The typographic-based interface is a pleasure to use.

At the heart of the device is the notion of simple communication, thus users are able to dial a phone number, bring up a speed dial or contact and send quick messages with incredible ease.

Design Challenge

The proposed additions to the Light Phone 2 from its previous model are sounding a lot more smartphone-like, however, under no circumstances will the phone introduce social media, advertising, email or news features. The new model can be understood as the middle-man on the spectrum between a purist 'dumbphone' like the previous model and traditional smartphones.
