Project Overview

This project showcases a thoughtfully designed three-bedroom residence with two inviting living rooms, perfectly tailored for a couple and their young child. The design embraces a harmonious blend of wabi-sabi and modern aesthetics, creating an environment that is both simple and exquisitely refined. Within a compact space of under 99 square meters, the design team has skillfully optimized the layout to align with the family's needs while enhancing the visual scale of the interiors. Each aspect of the design has been carefully considered to strike a balance between beauty and functionality.

Project Brief

Key features of the residence include gracefully rounded shapes, innovative concealed storage solutions, and child-safe designs free of sharp corners, all contributing to a serene and welcoming atmosphere. Importantly, the planning anticipates the evolving needs of the family, especially as their child grows. To further this adaptability, a deliberate "blank canvas" design approach has been adopted, allowing for the seamless integration of additional functional facilities in the future. This foresight ensures that the space remains flexible, diverse, and sustainable, making it an ideal living environment for this family of three.

Project Need

Stepping into the shared living area, one will be immediately captivated by the thoughtfully designed space, where the beams and columns feature elegant rounded edges, beautifully complemented by partial indirect lighting. This meticulous design not only alleviates any feelings of confinement created by the lowered structural elements but also preserves the grandeur of the soaring ceiling at the center of the room. Importantly, it addresses safety concerns, creating a welcoming environment for children to run and play freely without the risk of injury from sharp corners.

Design Challenge

The design team has embraced an open-plan layout that seamlessly merges the living room and dining area. This harmonious integration allows natural light to pour unhindered through the space, brilliantly solving the common issue of a dim interior and fostering a bright, inviting atmosphere. A remarkable centerpiece in the living room is the striking TV wall, crafted with artistry from dual layers of curved wooden panels. The lower panel, a substantial 25 cm deep, serves as a robust foundation, while a slender top panel adds a touch of sophistication and is meticulously reinforced to securely accommodate a large television. Enhancing the aesthetic appeal, an LED light strip is embedded into the back panel, with deliberate breaks in the concave arc that create a captivating play of light and shadow, enriching the visual texture of the space.

Moreover, the lower TV cabinet, designed to stand at a graceful 15 cm high, perfectly balances form and function, offering not only visual elegance but also practical utility that complements the overall design ethos. Each element in this space has been carefully curated to create an environment that exudes both style and comfort.

Sustainability

The design team thoughtfully incorporated an S-shaped arc motif into the ceiling beams of both the master bedroom and the playroom, adding an elegant touch that enhances the overall aesthetic of these intimate spaces. This artistic choice not only harmonizes with the theme of the residence but also helps mitigate any feelings of confinement or discomfort that might be associated with the imposing beams. In the playroom, the team made a conscious decision to maintain a minimalist approach, eschewing excessive decorations and furnishings. This strategic choice allows for a versatile environment that caters to the current needs of the children while providing ample space for future furniture additions. The result is a functional and inviting area that seamlessly adapts to the evolving dynamics of family life.
