Project Overview

UAA engaged Evoke Projects to design and fit out their new office in the prestigious newly constructed building, "The Eighth," located in South Melbourne. As a long-standing client of Evoke, having previously collaborated on two successful office fit-outs, this project presented an exciting opportunity to continue collaborating with UAA, crafting a workplace that fosters their team’s growth while boosting job satisfaction and promoting seamless collaboration.

Project Brief

Both UAA and their sister company, Mecon Insurance, were to operate from the same office, requiring a design that catered to the distinct functionalities of both businesses. The workspace needed to reflect the evolving brand identities of UAA and Mecon while maximising the advantages of its prime location within a landmark building. Evoke Projects was tasked with delivering a workspace that would inspire employees, impress visitors, and support the continued growth of both companies.

As specialists in insurance for the construction, industrial, and commercial plant and equipment industries, UAA and Mecon’s identity influenced the design concept. The approach merged structured materials, such as natural stone and hard concrete finishes, with exposed ceilings that revealed ductwork and services, evoking an industrial aesthetic. This robust look was softened by incorporating a fresh and light aesthetic based on the clients’ preferred style. Timber textures, soft curves, and a palette of white tones introduced a sense of warmth and calmness, balancing the industrial elements to create a cohesive and inviting workspace.

The workplace design primarily featured an open-plan layout, fostering collaboration and a sense of community among staff. The boardroom was designed to open seamlessly into the staff breakout area, creating a flexible space ideal for large team collaboration days, functions, or events.

Project Innovation/Need

The design harmonises the branding of the two companies within a cohesive workspace. UAA’s signature bright red was subtly reinterpreted through muted tones such as burnt tan materials and softened red accents, aligning with the client’s preference for a more understated representation. Mecon’s green branding, on the other hand, was thoughtfully integrated into the design through the use of lush greenery strategically placed throughout the workplace. This approach not only represented both brands effectively but also created a balanced and visually appealing environment that felt unified and inviting.

Design Challenge

The building's ongoing construction during the design process also presented it’s challenges, particularly with timing and access to the site. Coordination and flexibility were essential to navigate these constraints effectively. Adding to the complexity, a last-minute decision was made to relocate the tenancy to a different level, deemed more suitable for the client’s needs. This change required some rework to the design to adapt to the new space, testing the team’s ability to pivot quickly while maintaining the project’s vision and quality. Despite these hurdles, the end result delivered a functional and aesthetically pleasing workspace tailored to the client’s requirements.

Sustainability

Taking sustainability into consideration, natural timbers, stones and plants were used throughout the design. The existing concrete slab was used in areas to minimise waste. Biophilic elements were also used to incorporate elements of wellness into the design and support occupant wellbeing.

Laminex and Polytec products were used for all cabinetry and joinery. These suppliers employ a range of processes along with the latest technology to ensure they reduce their carbon footprint such as timber certifications, Global GreenTag certified products, low emission products and ISO 14001 certification.
